Cancer New Moon: Don't make me go find your roots...you do it!

Cancer NEW MOON 2015

By Tracy Cook

Many years ago I studied lunar phases with Robert Buz Myers.  It is my hope that he would be proud of my work today.  Blessings to you, Buz!

What is a New Moon?

A new moon is the beginning of a 29-day cycle.  Technically, when you look up in the sky you only see a thin section of the moon illuminated.

And the not so technical point of view?

Well, similar to farmers and indigenous people, who have used the eight phases of the moon for eons, astrologers also utilize the different phases of the Moon.  Certainly on the New we know it is time to plant seeds.  But the other seven phases are equally important.

Where should my focus be during this next 29-day cycle?

When we draft a chart for the new moon we can get a sense of the energy that will be up for processing for the next 29 days.

Okay what is this cycle about?   How do your roots still dictate your life today?   And how are they keeping good from your authentic self?

Treasure Map Check In

Let’s get through a couple pieces of business before we get into the nuts and bolts of Cancer New Moon.    Back in April during Aries New Moon we launched our Treasure Maps.    We cut and pasted and wrote and searched and printed and painted and did what ever we could to put our goals for the New Year on a poster board (or cyber page).    We set our goals and intentions.   We dreamed big.   Now on Cancer New Moon we look at our Treasure Maps and we take a moment to assess.   What results have occurred that speak to our goals?   Acknowledge the movement.  Perhaps you will say a prayer of gratitude and thanks to your maker.    If you look at your map and feel the need to clarify some points, take the first few days of Cancer New Moon to add (or remove) items on your map. Perhaps you need to add a few words or a photo just for clarification.   And if it seems to you that your goals have not sprung green sprouts as of yet, take a breath, thank your map for being there and pray for patience and trust.   Remember we have nine more months.  Let’s see what comes up.   And be grateful you have your map to remind you of your goals.

Cancer The First Water Sign

Cancer is the first water sign of the zodiac and puts our emotions and our feelings out front.   We have wrapped up Gemini that spoke to our brain and our mental wiring.  Now we are focused on the emotions that rise up in us when we are confronted with anything pleasant or unpleasant.     Cancer is similar to the water in the ocean.  At times it is small waves lapping up on the shore at other times it is powerful large waves pounding the coast.   Same water molecules but totally different heights and force.   The trick with Cancer is figuring out a way to process those emotions.   Sometimes they flood all over the place and sometimes they are a trickle.   But if we process and perhaps harness the emotions we can accomplish a lot.   However, here is what does NOT work with Cancer energy—denying our emotions.    The emotions are there to send a message to us.   Denying them is a waste of time and misguided.    What is more important is to feel the emotions and with this particular Cancer New Moon chart it is to use those emotions to get us to a new ‘spot’.

This Cancer New Moon chart has a number of highlights.   The Sun and Moon trine Saturn and the Sun/Moon square Uranus.  Mars and Mercury are also in a wide conjunction with the Sun and Moon.   This is a lot of action for the second cardinal and the first water sign.    The key word for this Cancer cycle is:  MOVEMENT.  But that movement is based on roots.   Huh?  How can something that is rooted be capable of moving?    Ah, good question and we will rub up against the answer(s) all 29 days.     Let’s get started.

Big Ol’ Happy Baby

There is a TV commercial that whenever it comes on I stop and have to watch it.  The commercial is silly. It shows a giant baby in a parking spot, on a drive way and in a parking lot.   We see a man spraying the baby with a hose, or racing to protect it when a shopping cart bumps into it.   This giant baby is supposed to be the man’s car.  He doesn’t see the car; instead, he sees the car as a baby.   It is a silly commercial for I think auto insurance.  I am confused about the product because I’m stuck on the smiling big baby who is quite compelling.  It is impossible to not smile when you see this big happy baby.

So, why on god’s green earth am I writing about a big ol’ happy baby on Cancer New Moon?    Because that image is important to the root of Cancer.    Cancer rules emotions, sensitivities, nostalgia, family, childhood, motherhood, food, and home. And it rules roots. If something is cozy in your life—that is the Cancer energy.    The Moon rules Cancer and is therefore at home in the sign Cancer.     By the way, mom, apple pie and the American flag speak greatly to the United States, which is of course a Cancer with its 4th of July birthday.

So, back to the big baby.   You were born a big happy baby.  Yes, you were.  But perhaps something went askew.   Let’s talk about childhood.   What was going on with your childhood?   What happened?  Or what didn’t happen?  How were you nurtured, protected and treated with tenderness?   How did people give you cozy?   How were you understood?   Were you a smiling big baby?   Why or why not?   How was adolescence?   Did the nurturing continue?   What was going on with your house?  How was mom?  How was parenting in general?    Was it healthy?    What was it about?   What did family look like?

Cutting back to today, of course you are living your life far away from the baby that you once were a long time ago.   For some of you, you have lived a very good life despite a bumpy childhood.    And maybe there are some of you who had a bright childhood and you folded into a nice adulthood.   But whatever was your childhood; you would be well served on this New Moon and 29 day lunar cycle to contemplate your roots.    Of course, the older we are, often the harder it is to look back because as many people say, “That’s water under the bridge.  That’s a long time ago, doesn’t mean much now.”   But on a Cancer new moon with a trine to Saturn and square to Uranus, someone should remove my license to practice astrology if I did not push you to look at your roots, and even if you think it is all old news and doesn’t mean shit, I ask you to look at those roots and contemplate what shifts you made along the way and how is it creating blocks now?

Yes, I am asking you to get all Dr. Phil and Oprah about your childhood and not just blow past it with “So, what? I’m fine”.     I don’t even know you so I am not judging your childhood. That is not my business.  But what is my business is to tell you that a Sun/Moon Cancer square Uranus Aries suggests that for 29 days we are going to feel or see the habits that were hatched out of childhood and are still in effect now.   Remember, Uranus is squaring Sun/Moon and he is here to make changes especially around cloying bad habits.   If you need the right image for Uranus in Aries, imagine a lightening strike in a national forest.   The lightening hits a tree, which catches on fire and then ignites other trees.  The forest rangers will let the fire burn because they need the old growth to burn off and they wait for rain to eventually put it out. All of us should be on the lookout for lightening and fires in our life for 29 days.  Let the fire burn the old growth and then let your watering emotions put out the fire.

What is old growth?

Let’s look at Cancer for hints, where are you crabby?  Where do you use knee jerk reactions?   Where are you impulsive?   Where are you cold?  Pessimistic?  Crestfallen?  Where do feel like you are doomed?   Are you lonely in your bones?   How is your money?  What’s going on with food?  Where are you a poor victim?  Where are you too much a mom?  Are you a hoarder?  Are you neglected?  Are you too sensitive?   Are you being bullied?   Are you emotionally rigid and stuck and insist in order for you to be happy you must have _______?    Are you manipulative?  Are you manipulated?   Are your habits just stupid, insecure and you know it?   We all have Cancer somewhere in our chart. And some of us even have Moon in Cancer (cough, cough) and can speak volumes on the old growth Cancer.

What does a lightening Strike look like?

Let’s look at Aries for hints.   Where do you need independence?  Where do you need to take care of you?  Where do you need to carve your own path?   Where do you need to put you first?   Where do you need to be unique?  Where do you need breakthroughs?  Where do you need breakouts?  Where do you need to tell everyone “Shut the Eff up?”  Where do you need to do something entirely different?

Going back to Childhood

How do all those questions connect back to childhood?   What would it take for you to make changes?  And I am not talking about what you tell your friends and loved ones.  I am talking about the stuff you hold deep in your psyche and your gut.  Like Cancer the crab, the stuff you keep deep in your shell.  The thing you probably don’t talk about except maybe to a therapist.  THAT stuff is what Uranus in Aries needs to shake up.   Things as in  “I’m not worthy”, “I don’t deserve”, “I can’t receive,”  “I am cursed,”  “I am broken”, “I am unloveable”, “I need to do everything because no one else will” that kind of yucky old stuff.     All of it goes back to that Big Baby and the childhood she or he had.    Or didn’t have.

Remember we all deserved to be a big fat happy baby.   Read that twice.  But we didn’t all get it or feel it.     So, what to do?   The best answer is forgiveness for sure.   If you haven’t done that then begin the process by forgiving those asshats that were your parents.  You don’t have to open the floodgates and invite them over for a party.  It is just forgiveness in your heart and psyche so you can move on.  Or if your parents were not lame and took super good care of you but left you with unreasonable expectations of the world and weak interpersonal skills then forgive them for not letting you grow more on your own.  Or maybe you were just an odd child then forgive the fact that you ended up being born in the wrong time or into the wrong family or with the wrong wiring.   Or if you have already forgiven your parents or your odd timing, then you may need to forgive self for being such a great survivor.

Why are we forgiving our inner survivor?  Somewhere along the way you chose to be a warrior and protect you.   Great. Good for you.    But in order to be a warrior you gave up something.  Was it your softness?  Was it your vulnerability?  Was it your creativity?  Was it a free flowing intuition?    Was it in your inability to stop doing shit that keeps you small?  Or perhaps you gave up the ability to just relax.   Maybe you are always on stand by, waiting for the other shoe to drop, the awful phone call to arrive or just basically wound up as tight as possible.  Forgive yourself for doing that number to your body and your adrenal glands.   Fight or flight is great in certain circumstances but not great for a long lifetime.   And Cancer as hard as it is and productive as it can be does have a shell full of insecurities.     All of this speaks to your roots and they need to be trimmed and replanted in fresh new soil.       Lucky for us we have got Saturn trine Sun/Moon to provide support.

If Uranus in Aries is bulldozing up our emotions then Saturn is helping us rebuild them from a new depth and with a stronger foundation.   Do you see why I am asking you to not to be afraid to look at the debris field of childhood?   Look back (Cancer), strike hard (Aries) make big adjustments (Uranus) and then rebuild (Saturn) with intensity (Scorpio).   Saturn wants to help.  He knows how to restructure everything.  He knows how to put a spine in a back.   We become more erect when we work with Saturn.    Saturn shapes Sun/Moon with purpose and we feel responsible to step up and fix our insecurities.     Not only is Saturn in a trine with Sun/Moon he is also speaking to Venus and that is a whole other magillah.

Venus Retrograde and Saturn direct.

Venus/Saturn form a big square a couple days before the new moon and influences the chart and 29-day lunar cycle.   Then on July 25, Venus turns retrograde at 0 Virgo and Saturn turns direct on August 2 at 29 Scorpio.   Two planets in a strong aspect on the Lunar Chart and then both those planets change direction during the chart’s cycle. What are the odds?   Small, for sure.   Obviously, Saturn and Venus are getting our attention.

Venus like all planets when retrograde appears to be going backwards.   It is of course an optical illusion but in astrology that illusion kicks butts.   Let’s take a moment and remember the three weeks of Mercury retrograde in May and June.  There is not enough vodka in the world to blot out that three-week period in my mind.     Anyway, Venus retrogrades last around five weeks and they only happen about every 18 months.    Our last Venus Rx was December 2013/January 2014 in Capricorn.   Take a moment and think back what was going on with you at that time.

Venus speaks to what we value.  The reason why Venus is the planet of love, beauty and money is not because it is about love, beauty or money, it is because Venus is about what we VALUE.  For most of the world Beauty, Love and Money are highly valued.   It is very interesting that Venus does not begin her retrograde at 29 degrees Leo but instead it the retrograde kicks off at Zero Virgo.  Virgo, which is a way different energy.   Mega Way different.   Here’s the deal, if you have a daily calendar that is in conflict with what you value, or what you truly love get out of the way and watch what comes up.   Virgo looks at our daily life.  Our vitamins, our exercise, our work, our calendar, our appointments, our daily health and included in that is how we love and are loved daily.    It is all up for assessment.   Not little boy, training wheels assessment but instead big ass ‘I mean business’ assessment.  Why is it big ass?   Because during Venus retrograde there will be interactions with Jupiter, Uranus, Mars and then Venus goes back and hits them a second time.   Yeah, she is getting our attention.   And of course the Saturn Venus square brings out insecurities.  How does your self-esteem vibrate when your money and your love is shaky?   Are you valuable to the world if your love life sucks?  Are you valuable to the world if your money is lame?  Are you valuable to the world if your creativity is stuck?  Are you valuable to the world if your beauty feels off?  If no, why?    What is keeping you from living your inner joy? Take the Venus retrograde to fix the misguidedness you have about your value.  Or maybe it is the value of your partners?   Maybe you are hanging on to someone for all the wrong reasons.    Maybe you are staying out of relationships for all the wrong reason.  Maybe you have put a partner on a pedestal?  Should they be there?    Maybe your love life is directly related to some bump in childhood.   Are you ready to have Saturn help fix those bumps?   Do you see why you need to look back at your roots?

For five weeks we will be pondering:

What do you value?  How do you value it?  How do you value it every day?  How are you being valued?  How are you being valued every day?    Where are you being OCD? (Virgo)  Where are you being dramatic? (Leo)  How are others’ nervousness (Virgo) getting in your way of being valued?   How are others’ drama (Leo) getting in the way of you being valued?  Are you giving more than you are getting?   Or are you taking more than you are giving?

How is pride getting in the way of your daily life (Leo & Virgo)?   How is ego showing up daily?  Is that a good thing?  How is your love brave?   How are you giving away your strength in your daily life (Leo/Virgo)?     There will be some of us who will assess everything and what to immediately jettison someone or somethings.   Sure.  I get it.   And you may also want to wait on some things until after the Venus Rx concludes.  There is a lot to be learned by all of us for the next five weeks.   And watch what comes up in the news about love, money, pride, ego, nervousness and health.

Put these dates on your radar:

On June 21 Venus went into its shadow (14 Leo 23) – We will revisit some of the stuff that came up after this date.

On July 25 Venus stations RX  (0 Virgo 46) – We are on Value Patrol.  Especially what we value in our daily activities.

On July 31 Venus returns to Leo (during a full moon no less) More Value patrol especially about unbridled love versus ego.

On Sept 6 Venus stations direct 14 Leo 23 – Oh, boy what have we learned?  And how do we apply it?

On October 8 Venus returns to Virgo –what is my daily life looking like now?

On October 9 Venus exits its shadow (0 Virgo 46) –Phew, how is my life different now than it was on June 21st?

And Saturn?

Saturn turns direct at 28/29 Scorpio on August 2 pushing us to finalize any issues around resources, empowerment, taxes, legal matters, sex, loans, obsessions, dark energies that need death and rebirth.   Along with shallow issues that need depth (once again through death and rebirth.)    Scorpio is anything that we co-mingle with others like our money, blood, our DNA and sex.   It is also our black and white sides.  The part of us that shows no gray.   Saturn returned to Scorpio on June 14th and will go back to Sagittarius on September 17th.   As we have mentioned before, once Saturn leaves Scorpio he won’t return for 28 more years.  So, do you think it is a critical time to deal with sex, money, shared resources, loans, DNA, blood and the parts of our psyche that scare the bejeesus out of us?   Purge, purge, purge.   It is also a significant time to deal with compulsions and addictions.   Is it time for rehab? Is it time for 12 step?  Is it time for a real in your face therapist?   You know better than anyone.   Anyway, work on your shadow side during this limited period.    It is just too important to ignore and remember we don’t get it again for 28 years.    Just sayin’.

Uranus  retrograde

And here comes coincidence number three, if we believed in them.  How interesting that Uranus who is squaring the Sun/Moon in Cancer will also be changing direction this cycle.   My goodness, the Universe really wants to get our attention!    On July 26, Uranus turns retrograde at 20/21 degrees of Aries.   It will turn direct on December 25 (10:53pm EST).   “Mommy, Santa gave me a direct Uranus for Christmas!”   Uranus spends about five months retrograde every year.  When I was younger and first learned about Uranus and his compulsive need for change and revolution I remember thinking, “Thank God, Uranus spends half the year retrograde, we couldn’t handle if he was always direct.”   Uranus in Aries has been speaking to the world in noisy and unpredictable ways.   The sudden ‘Arab Spring’ was tied to Uranus turning direct at 0 Aries in December 2011.   How has the world been working since that date?  Yeah, let’s be grateful Uranus goes retrograde half the year.   At this point we are past the halfway mark of Aries transit.  Uranus will move into Taurus in 2018/2019 and that will be a significant different energy, not sure what will happen to the stock market then but we’ll worry about that in 2018.   In the meantime we focus on the Arian energy.  Are we being bold?  Are we recognizing our individual strength?  Are we using it to better our world?   Who is pushy in our world?  What is it that they want to accomplish?   What are you starting from your own self-motivation?  How flexible are you when weird out of the blue change lands in your lap?     Are you finding opportunities in weird ways?   Where are you being a rebel?   Being rebellious is not necessarily wrong but ask yourself what is your motivation?  Is it for greater good?  Or is it from some unresolved insecurity?     Do you see the importance in looking back at your roots during this Cancer cycle with Uranus squaring the Sun/Moon and then turning retrograde?   Watch between now and December 25 and see what truths come up and how they need your energy.   Independence and new roads will be highlighted.   Can you see them?   We have five months to stay observant.

A note on Mars

Argumentative Mars will be looking for a fight between July 15-July 25.  On the 15th he gets into it with Pluto (end of Gemini lunar cycle) then squares Uranus on July 25th.   That whole 10 period could be arguments, short fuses, fisticuffs and really awful drivers.  Even if you are sensible driver you may find yourself in tough spots.   Drive your car, drive your mouth, drive your energy in a sensible way and try to slow it all down.   And of course just when Mars completes his fight with Uranus… Venus and then Uranus change direction, which will throw everything up in the air.    B R E A T H E.

In conclusion:   Your emotions are important.  They should not be denied.  But look carefully at those emotions.  If they are rooted in something old and yucky then take these 29 days to clean up the yuck.   Once you can embrace how your roots are in the mix and clean them up you will accomplish a lot this cycle.  You may even be smiling at the end like a big ol’ happy baby!

NEW MOON

The 8 phases

New Moon

July 15, 2015

9:24pm  EDT

23 Cancer 14

New moon: Plant seeds, make calls, activate, start projects.   Activate something that will ideally lead you to more.  This is the phase where INTENT is critical.  Even if the results are not immediate, the intent is there.  You may not have all the answers or road map but you should put out your Intent.

This focus:   What are your roots?  How are your emotions today rooted in your childhood of yesterday?  How is it working for you?  Really how is it working?  Plant seeds that speak to you healing the bumps that started years ago in childhood and you are now ready to live a more authentic rich and empowering life.   Yes, you are ready.

Special Focus:

7/16: Mercury/Mars.   Fast thoughts.  Faster mouth.   Watch the comments.

7/18:  Venus in Virgo * will retrograde in a few days (7/25)

7/18: Mercury/Uranus The brain on short fuses.   Thoughts demanding breakthrough and break outs but feeling frazzled.

Crescent Moon Phase

July 19

8:54pm  EDT

Crescent:  We will receive information, we will research a bit more, perhaps get feedback on stuff that we planted on new.  Perhaps get some information that will help down the road on a seed we planted a while ago.  We can collect some data now.  Even if you think you are not getting information, stop, and re-look at everything.  Who called you?  Even the silliest things, when they come up during Crescent are note worthy.  A parking ticket?  An argument with a spouse?  A refund check from the phone company?  All of it needs to be considered a message from the universe.  How can this information help you?

Focus on:  What are your learning about mistakes?  What are you learning about perfection?  What are you learning about missing the mark on something?  What are you learning about taking care of daily business?  What are you learning about health and hygiene?   What are you learning about your diet?

Special Focus:

7/21: Sun/Saturn:  Emotions feel support, restructuring purpose.

7/22: Mercury/Saturn.  Calm, measured thinking.  Figuring out answers to any question and solutions.

7/22: Sun enters Leo

7/23: Mercury in Leo

7/23: Sun/Mercury: Bright ideas, creative thinking, inspired conversation and thinking.

First Quarter Moon

July 24

12:03am EDT

First quarter: We do more actions based on the information that we just received.  Or we feel our instincts guide us on something.  We pursue again.  We make another call or we see someone. We mail something.  We stir the pot again.  This can be a time when we realize that the goals we planted on New need more action from us, perhaps actions that involve breaking away.   Are there people who say they have our best interest in heart but fear us growing away from them?  Maybe we need to get help from others not the usual suspects.  Some independence may need to be exerted.

Focus on:  What actions can you take that are black and white?  How will these actions help you cut out the riff-raff?  Where are you hanging out in the grey neither committing to black or white but now you need to make the commitment?   What actions can you take that support authentic emotions?

Special focus

7/25: Venus retrograde at 0 Virgo 46  5:28am EDT to September 6, 2:30am (see above)

7/25: Mars/Uranus.  Sparks will fly.  Cars will swerve.  Swords will be raised.   Where will you be?   Good question.   Watch the impulsivity and warriors.

7/26:  Uranus retrograde 20 Aries 30  (until Dec 25  at 10:53pm EST) (see above)

Gibbous Moon

July 27

8:29pm  EDT

Gibbous:

We refine our information.  We pick and choose, we discriminate, and we organize to be ‘Virgo’ like.  We sort through details.  Have we missed something?  How are we sifting through the information?  Go back and make sure something hasn’t been neglected.  Refine our actions.

Focus on:

What have you missed about being optimistic?  What have you missed about shrugging stuff off?  How are you neglecting the value of travel?  How are you neglecting being philosophical?   How are you missing the great outdoors?  How are you missing the value of a good laugh?

Special Focus:

Full Moon Phase

July 31

6:42am EDT

7 AQ 56

Full Moon:  We make the needed adjustments on the things we planted. Usually emotions are up and running and for those people who perhaps did not utilize the new moon and the rest of the waxing moon, this is when emotions can get the better of us.  There can often be a big emotional break, for no other reason than to get back on track.   Some partnership will offer up some balance.  The moon is bright and full and there is no room for shadows, what is reflecting on you?

Focus on:   Full Moon in Aquarius.   Who is your tribe?  Who do you hang out with either in real life or online?    Are you able to be strong and show the real you and still have your tribe or community support you?  How are you being brilliant?  How are you being brave at your brilliance?     Go to blog for more details on full moon closer to the date.

http://tracyastrosalon.blogspot.com/

Special focus:

7/31:  Venus returns to Leo

8/2:  Saturn turns direct 28 Scorpio 17 (see above)

8/3: Jupiter/Saturn: Overindulgence versus tight wad.  Optimist vs Pessimist.  Open vs Close.  Multipoint solution vs single point solution.

August 3

Disseminating

12:55pm EDT

Disseminating: Share information; find a teacher or someone who has more knowledge. Perhaps there was a big ol’ blow out on the full and one feels in need of support and help, this is the phase to reach out to one who knows more. This is when we find a rabbi or a minister or therapist who gives us more insight.   And of course, you too may be ready to teach and share your own information.

Focus on:  How are you sharing your faith? How are you sharing humanitarianism?  How are you sharing your metaphysics?  How are you sharing your gentleness?  How are you sharing your dreaminess?  How are you sharing your fuzziness?  How are you sharing religion?  Or spirituaity?

Special focus:

8/4: Venus/Jupiter  Values and resources expand.  Opportunities open up.  Love and money get a little stroke.

8/4: Venus/Saturn.   Values and resources are getting slapped.  Darn.  And on the same day Venus gets the a stroke from Jupiter, Saturn pushes us back.  Dream big, consider big but do the hard work that will satisfy Saturn.

8/6: Mercury/Venus.  Thoughts around values are highlighted.  Love, money and creativity are injected with new ideas and thoughts that support growth.

8/6: Mercury/Saturn:  Sharp thoughts and sharp tongue.  Negative thinking.  Cloudy ideas.

Last Quarter Moon Phase

August 6

10:02pm EDT

Last Quarter moon:  Now we do the final adjustments to the seeds we planted on new. The final call, the final letters to send, we follow all the trails that came up that still make sense.  And we let the other parts lay fallow. It is a time of action but wise action.  It is a time for living  “The serenity prayer

God, grant me the Serenity
to accept the things
I cannot change Courage to change the
things I can, and the
Wisdom to know the difference.

Focus on:

What actions are you taking that speak to your sensualness?  What actions can you take that speak to taking care of finances?  What actions can you take that help set up you building your own thing?  How are your emotions directly connected to what you value?  How can you build on those values?

Special focus:

8/7:  Mercury in Virgo

8/7: Mercury/Jupiter:  Broadening thoughts.  Visionary.   Focused ideas and insights that expand thinking.

8/8: Mars in Leo

Balsamic Moon Phase

July 10

1:16pm EDT

Balsamic:   We let go.  By releasing we can prepare for the new.

Focus on We release our feelings.  We release our need to emote.  We release our manipulation through emotions.    We release our guilt.  And our guild on others.

Special focus:

8/11:  Jupiter in Virgo

8/12: Mercury/Neptune:  Fuzzy thinking.  Dreamy thinking.  Communication looks weird and odd and not necessarily is it the truth.
