The Spiritual Candle
The purpose of this practical guide to the ancient art of candle burning is simple; I want to de-mystify its practice.
If you have ever lit a candle for a prayer or wish, be it in a church or the privacy of your home, you are aware of the spiritual wonder of candle burning. Once the candle is lit, an immediate sense of peace, hope and comfort is experienced. Its bright light awakens one's "inner light" and the darkness of our problems and doubts is less menacing, if only for a few moments. Even if the candle lit only for decorative purposed, such as evening dinning, it exerts a comforting, romantic feeling.
The origins of candle burning are lost in the mists of antiquity. There are records of the practice in every ancient civilization. From the beginning of time, immemorial priests, saints, and those who had the gift of sight, have burnt candles to make wishes come true. Candles, when burt on a regular basis and with a definite objective in mind, become not only instruments of psychological and emotional comfort, but also powerful aids to manifestations.
It was the ancient religious leaders that decided that burning candles for this purpose was to become a cornerstone of practice in many religious establishments such as the Catholic, Greek, and Russian churches.
Today the Roman Catholic churches throw their hands up in horror at even the remotest suggestion that their Church is founded on "paganism." "Anti-Catholics" (i.e. Protestant extremists) often point to a long list of similar beliefs and practices of Roman Catholicism to those of Paganism. All of which are very silly. Every time anyone lights a candle, they are engaging in the manifestation of light. The intention is what matters.
However, we are not here to become involved in a theological debate, and I imply no criticism of Catholicism or Protestant beliefs. I merely point out that candle burning is basically a Pagan concept that eventually became a UNIVERSAL SPIRITUAL PRACTICE. The fact is that the desire to burn candles to fulfill wishes or create a mood is a universal need that crosses all religious barriers, not counting extremist sects. How many times have you seen thousands of people standing together in unity over something sad or powerful while holding up a white candle?
