What is a New Moon?

A new moon is the beginning of a 28 day cycle.  Technically, when you look up in the sky you only see a thin section of the moon illuminated.       

And the not so technical point of view?

Well, similar to farmers and indigenous people, who have used the eight phases of the moon for eons, Astrologers also utilize the different phases of the Moon.  Certainly on the New we know it is time to plant seeds.  But the other seven phases are equally important.

Where should my focus be during this next 28-day cycle?

When we draft a chart for the new moon we can get a sense of the energy that will be up for processing for the next 28 days. 

Okay what is this cycle about?   It is vital to look around us and see how we can improve our position.   For 28 days we will see flaws and cracks and it is our responsibility to stretch ourselves and fix them.    You may surprise yourself at the end of the cycle to see your new goals.

New Moon Phase

As always, by the time Capricorn New moon shows up, we are ready for it.  After 28 days of merrymaking and too much of too much, we are ready for the reality check that is Capricorn.    Let’s take the lampshade off our head and prepare for the ceiling to crash in on it!   I jest, Cap is not that negative but he is sober and very measured.   Cap knows the value of conserving, is wildly responsible and of course his discipline is legendary.   Capricorn knows how to construct a foundation and then build upon it.   At first Cap can be very modest but don’t let their sometimes shy appearance fool you.   They are always plotting and planning how to improve their position.   They may see disaster around the corner and have a garage full of preparation.  Or they may see themselves at a job that is beneath their skills and are preparing for their next rung up.    They have an eye for going up.

I remember when my son was young and we used to watch a lot of the animated series, “Thomas the Tank Engine.”  It was set in England and the trains were always having skirmishes with each other.  Eventually in most episodes there would come a point when one of the trains would complain about another train who was overreaching and not remembering their ‘station.’    Not train station but ‘station’ in life, as in class.  I always was humored by it and thought, “How Cap of those trains!”  

I have seen more than one Moon in Capricorn get their undies all bunched up:  When someone younger gets in a position of power above them.   When someone they feel has not paid their dues accomplishes something significant.   When someone they feel is pretending to be something they are not by buying something big.   Can you see the ‘station’ in all that?   My father who was a Capricorn often suggested that people were pretentious or phony based on their house or car.  I usually laughed (Sag that I am) because I never quite saw the pretentiousness.   I just thought they liked the house or car and had the money so why the heck not buy it?   Now, as silly as my dad was about his labeling, what was really going on was he was keying into the ‘station’ part of Cap.   And on one hand it seems silly but on the other hand it does speak to the greater part of Cap.  They know that humans need to excel and push themselves and they should break free from their station.   They should be looking at their world thinking, “What’s next?”

Remember, Capricorn is the mountain goat who spends his time high on the peaks.  During the Capricorn phase we need to stretch and put ourselves up high and make sure we are where we belong.     We are the ultimate authority (Capricorn word) of our life and from a high authoritative perch we can see our assets and our deficits and then decided what move to make to improve our situation.      Remember everyone has Capricorn somewhere in their chart.   Where is your Cap?   This is the house where you will stretch and make yourself an authority or a leader.   We are natural managers where we have Cap.   It is the part of our chart where we are the Boss.   Of course, the question is, “Are we Warren Buffett or are we Ebenezer Scrooge?”    

This Capricorn New Moon the Sun/Moon is in conjunction to Pluto and squares Uranus.   Ouch.  That is a tight spot.   Pluto has been ruthless to big business, big government and world economies since it moved into Capricorn in 2008 and we will be dealing with issues that are broken within government and big businesses for another dozen or so years

But what about us? Where do we personally fit in this big global financial mess and the upcoming changes?     That, my friends is the beauty of Capricorn New Moons.   Between now and 2023 there will be some Cap new moons that will be right in the sweet spot where they have a Pluto conjunction.  I say sweet spot because those New Moon and lunar cycles will  gives us a 28 day chiropractic adjustment to get with the program and make some changes or at least become an authority in our life on a new profound level that can prepare us for changes.   This year is one of those Cap New Moons.  

We will see flaws.  We will see cracks and fissures in some area of our life (most likely the house that has Capricorn).  We will feel insecure, we will feel ‘less than’.   But and this is a big but, from that place of insecurity we will get focused and do something.  Something that helps move us from the position we are currently holding to a more elevated position.     Where do we have vision? Where do we have executive abilities?  Where do we need to be an authority?   And why are we hiding our skills?  Or how come we have been so busy we have not focused on them?   And if we have been playing small and hiding are skills----well, good luck trying to stay small this month!    It won’t feel right.    

This is where Uranus comes into play.   We all know that in June & September of 2012 there is a big ol’ fight between Pluto and Uranus.   It is going to get bumpy between now and the summer.  Globally there will be a lot of changes that start small and grow exponentially which will push everyone to wonder what is right and what is wrong?   However we get a taste of that future right now because Uranus and Pluto are not exactly squaring each other yet but they are both influencing the new Moon.   It is a 28 day canary in a coal mine.    Uranus is demanding that we be different and unique and Pluto cuts us to the bone.   One says “Make changes” and the other says, “What do you really need?”  “Not think you need, but really need?” 

For the next 28 days we will see flaws and at the same time we will begin changes.   Changes are tough because they ask us to trust.  And with Uranus in Aries we are going to have to trust big time!   Aries is fiery and I live in brush fire country so I can tell you once it gets started, a fire can burn fast and furious! Passions will be up.    We may all get a little OCD’ish for the next 28 days.   The tension of the Sun/Moon/Pluto/Uranus will be such that we will feel we are behind schedule.   Not just a schedule that is given to us by an employer but our own schedule.   Many of us will say, “How did I end up here and how can I change it now?”   We will be a wee bit obsessed as we work to get out of a spot or place.   Like Thomas the Tank Engine, we will be eyeing our next station.

Globally, there will be news events that just look like a big fat mess.   Change is not easy and it is not tidy but at its core, Uranus in Aries is demanding huge unique change and it doesn’t care who is with him or against him.  He’s just moving as fast as he can.     Watch what gets you fired up for the next 28 days.  It might be a harbinger of the summer.  Remember we have a lot going on between June and September of 2012 and this is 28 day window may connect to that time.

By the way, this is a side note, but when Capricorn is bad and insecure his ego is the worst.  He buys crap to make himself feel better.  Or he judges others by what they have or not have and sees himself as better.   For me, I do not think it is a coincidence that during this time of Pluto in Capricorn there has been a proliferation “Real Housewife” shows and their derivatives on TV.   People spending and fighting in gluttonous ways and all of us judging it?   What could be more Pluto in Cap!  

Jupiter to the Rescue

So, here we are at the base of a mountain, looking up and knowing we need to climb that mountain and get to the top.    The climb will be strenuous and the air will be thin.  Can we climb it?  And can our lungs adjust to the less oxygen?   The answer is “yes” we can do the climb, if we take it step by step in a measured (Cap word) way and “yes” we’ll be able to breathe up there if our load is light.  We will let go of stuff that is not working and is not practical with the help of Jupiter. 

A few hours after the New Moon, Jupiter turns direct having been retrograde in Taurus since August.    And on this new moon, where we are being forced to look at our position and figure out how to improve upon it, Jupiter is turning around and says, “I’ll help!”   Given he is the biggest mucky muck around, this is one auspicious helper.    What has been going on since August?   What has kept you busy since August?   Taurus does hard work, even manual work.  What has been sucking up a lot of your time and energy since August?   You should be feeling a light at the end of the tunnel.   After five months of hard work and extra responsibilities you are feeling it is time to release the yoke and lighten your load.    I don’t usually put much emphasis on the new calendar year (January 1^st) since I’m astrologer and the real new year for me is in the spring.    But with Jupiter turning direct on December 25^th which is right on the Capricorn new moon which is so close to January 1^st I have a strong feeling that this is an extremely auspicious New Year to begin new things.    Jupiter turning direct will give us a sense of a fresh start. 

Another note about Jupiter retrograded in Taurus.   Taurus rules money, banks investments and properties.   Jupiter has been messing with the banks.  Up, down, saving the Euro, letting it crash, inflating then deflating commodities, all of these have been wonky since  August.   Now with Jupiter turning direct we are all going to learn more about what are our real assets.   Jupiter will remain in Taurus until June when it moves into Gemini.   This is going to be a tough for a world that is in a recession because to a certain extent Jupiter has been protecting and helping us for the last year or so while it has been in Taurus.  After all, Taurus rules banks.  But once it moves into Gemini we will no longer have its support.  Especially the real estate market.  But we’ll talk about that later in the year.  In the meantime, Jupiter is going to turn direct and get us to focus on what we want and what are our real assets.  We will all be getting practical about what we really need and want.

Additionally,  along with turning direct Jupiter is also in trine with the Sun/Moon.      Jupiter will help us keep our sights on our target.  We won’t wobble.  He is our coach, our priest, our rabbi, he is doing everything he can to keep us on track.     When we get tired and say, “I can’t do it.”  He is there prompting us, “You can do it.”     It is nice to have that kind of encouragement all 28 days.
