Aries New Moon 2009---IT’S A BIG ONE!

What is a New Moon?

 

A new moon is when the moon is between the sun and the earth and the illuminated part of the moon is very small.  Technically, when you look up in the sky you only see a small, skinny section of moon.       

 

And the not so technical point of view?

 

Well, similar to farmers and indigenous people, who have used the different phases of the moon for eons, Astrologers also utilize the different phases of the moon.  Certainly on the New we know it is time to plant seeds.  But the other seven phases are equally important.

 

 

Where should my focus be during this next 28-day cycle?

When we draft a chart for the new moon we can get a sense of the energy that will be up for processing for the next 28 days. 

 

Okay what is this cycle?

It is very simple. The Universe has got one thing to say ----“It is your effin’ life ---what are you going to make of it???!!!!   

 

 

HURRAY, SPRING HAS RISEN

 

 

Yes, we all know that Spring emerged last week but for those of us who follow a lunar calendar we know that the real spring happens on Aries New Moon and like the bulbs whose green sprouts have begun to pierce the hard winter soil; this is the cycle where we plant our own bulbs-- knowing they too will sprout.   Let’s build a Treasure Map.

 

IT IS TREASURE MAP TIME

 

A Treasure Map is a collage of images of what we want during the next year. We make it on Aries New Moon because Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and the real beginning of the year.   I made my first map in 1996 on the suggestion of astrologer Buzz Myers.   Aries rules eyesight and as he explained actually ‘seeing’ what you want is vital on the Aries New Moon.  On your Treasure Map you place images gathered from magazines or the internet or hand drawn along with affirmations sayings, whatever speaks to you.  The key is for you to put it all together so you can see it in one place.  The Treasure Map will be your guide to the whole year and you should expect to see manifestations of your map by June. 

 

I have made many treasure maps and sometimes my wishes were exact and clear and some were subtle with softer images but no matter which mode I have taken, the maps work.  By the end of the year when I look at my map I will see many of the desires manifested.  Of course, some results did take two or three maps to manifest but I have to laugh when those desires finally showed up because there usually were some things that had to occur before my desires showed up that I would never have guessed when I first placed them on a map.   And sometimes maps are quite fast, for example on my first map I cut out an image of a guy on a sailboat from a Ralph Lauren advertisement.  I liked something about him.  I didn’t really have a clue why but I was attracted to him.  Two months later while working on a job I met a guy, soon we were dating and then we married.  My husband has been a sailor his whole life and his family is a member of a yacht club.  My sailor had sailed right into my life after I made my map.

But what you basically should know is that you do NOT start your map before Aries New Moon.  If you can make your map in the first 3.5 days up until Crescent Moon 3/30 12:28 am EDT---- do it!  But if it takes you longer then so be it…because it is better for you to make your map than NOT make it, so with that it mind you can take the whole waxing time which is right up to the Full Moon of course ideally I hope you can do it before Crescent.     

 

VENUS & MERCURY CHARMING THE PANTS OFF US

 

On Aries New Moon we will have a most beautiful conjunction of Mercury in Aries and Venus in Aries to the Sun and the Moon.    Mercury rules our minds and thoughts. It is the way we communicate. It is our siblings, it is our neighbors it is our newspapers (Hey do those still exists?) it is the letters we write.  It is emails.  Of course, Venus is love and it is beauty.  It is one of the “money” planets since Venus is the planet of values.   Aries of course is the sign of breaking new ground (remember the plants bursting through the ground)  Our thoughts will be grand perhaps rash. Our love will be quick and to the point.  Our desires and emotions will be both hot and bothered.  Clearly having those four planets together can bring great enthusiasm and could be fun.  Accent on ‘could’ since at the same time, Aries is a fiery sign and when you get those four together someone will be inclined to play with matches!   Who is shooting off their mouth?  Who is sloppy with money?  Who forgot to check their ego at the door?  And who has gone overboard with their emotions?

 

Expect a lot of noise out of Wall Street on Aries New Moon.  Some of it harsh given Venus and Mercury will also be making an aspect with Pluto!  There could be a rash act.   There might be something burned.  On a personal level, expect some snippiness from friends or family, maybe a sharp word or two.  Not necessarily out of mean-spiritedness but just more because people don’t feel they have time for a lot of bullshit.  And they call it the way they see it.   Which leads me to a bigger discussion.

 

 This Treasure Map-Aries New Moon is one of the most potent maps I have seen.  Perhaps ever.  And if you can bear with me for a minute I would like to give a bit more astro talk than usual.  

 

PLUTO POINTS THE WAY

 

Despite astronomers demoting Pluto to a dwarf planet, astrologers know it is Pluto that has caused all the financial wreckage since fall.  You may remember back in August when I wrote (Virgo New Moon) that as soon as Pluto turned direct on September 8^th and began its trek for Capricorn that he would not take any hostages.  Pluto destroys that which is weak or corrupt so that it can be turned around and rebuilt.  Since Pluto has not been in Cap since the 1700’s, it clearly had a lot of work to do!  As it turned out Fannie and Freddie imploded on September 8^th ---and the rest is history— dwarf planet indeed!  

 

Now, in November Pluto finally moved into Capricorn where it is remaining until 2023.  This means that every Treasure Map-(Aries New moon) runs a risk of being at odds with Pluto.  Again, more astro talk--- Aries and Capricorn do not get along.  They both want to be in charge, they both think they are sharper than each other.  Aries thinks Capricorn is a stick in the mud and Capricorn thinks Aries is too hot headed and rash.    When these two planets are in close degree to one another they make an aspect called a SQUARE.  Simply said, Squares are a pain in the ass---they hurt.  But more importantly, squares offer us a ‘crisis of opportunity’. 

 

I have taken the time to look ahead at all the Treasure Map New Moons between now and 2023 and I have compared Pluto to the Sun/Moon each year.   What I found is that there are six Treasure Map-(Aries New moons) that will be squared with Pluto.  In 2009 Pluto will Square Sun/Moon with a 3 degree separation.  In 2021 at 4 degrees, 2011, 2014 & 2018 at 5 degrees and 2016 at 1 degree.  For the rest of the years Pluto and the Sun/Moon are too far apart to be in aspect.  So, that means that out of 14 years there are 6 Treasure Maps that will have a Sun/Moon square Pluto and out of those 6 years, this new moon is one of the tightest square.  Only 2016 will have a tighter orb. 

 

So, what does that mean?  It means that the Pluto square Aries New Moon-Treasure Maps will have a strong punch to them. Pluto’s conflict with Sun and Moon in Aries (along with Venus and Mercury this year) is pushing us to break free.  Break new ground.  Aries demands straight forward talk, straight forward thinking.  Capricorn wants to be the executive in office with prestige, honor and recognition.  Both of them want to be respected and both are survivors.  Aries knows its survival comes from breaking into new territory and being a leader.   Capricorn finds survival through its infrastructure, its bones, its can create security through conserving. We should expect this Treasure Map to bring out our own needs--- we will want to reach and stretch but at the same time we will also want security.  That’s the rub. However, it is vital to remember that Pluto aspects always say one thing: “Change or be Changed.”

 

 And under a square aspect we can expect something to come up that rattles us or unnerves us, but remember whatever comes up is for a reason. It is pointing a way to that area in us that is weak.  Yeah, I know who wants that?  But there could be a bigger reason why some kind of shitty thing comes up.  Now don’t get me wrong, this New Moon is beautiful on many levels but we should not miss an opportunity to address the things that go bump in the night at least in our mind. Yes, we have a lovely New Moon conjunction from Venus and a conjunction to Mercury.  But still Pluto needs our attention.

 

How will you know if Pluto is sending you a message?  It is simple.  If some murky, yucky thing comes up on New Moon---then it is important for you to address it on your map.  Some annoying friend or family member says or does something that really hits you in the gut.  You get something in the mail that just slays you.  You experience some other annoyance, set back, hurt or injustice and it leaves you shaking.  Well, don’t just shake… put it on your MAP!

 

For example, perhaps you see yourself as non-materialistic in nature.  You like to focus on things that have to do with feelings or spirituality.  But on this new moon something comes up and it stings and you consider that your lack of focus on money is now rubbing you—you should then consider putting something on your map involving more money maybe it is an image of a fat wallet.  At first glance it might make you uncomfortable because it is so ‘out of character’.   Good.  It should push you.

 

Or maybe you have a body that is in trouble.  Perhaps your health is on the edge due to crap diet or lack of exercise.  You drink horrible things, you eat unconsciously and you get hit with something physical on the new moon or maybe someone who loves you dearly who can not hold their tongue any longer unleashes their thoughts about your body and how you are not taking care of yourself.  Sure, as much as you don’t want to focus on it, you should be compelled to up an image that addresses your health and your body.  A scale?  An affirmation, “I am happy with one thousand calories a day”.   I don’t know what it is, you know that answer…just put it up. 

 

Or maybe your marriage is in trouble and you feel unloved or trapped and let’s say you and your partner get it into it during new moon.  A real scrap.  Then this must be the Treasure Map where you put an image that represents love, companionship, true connection.   It may scare you because you think it is impossible to have it or worse you think it is impossible to have with this partner and so you don’t put it up because to put it up risks breaking up with your spouse.  Again, this is the pressure Pluto is putting on your  map.   If it scares you and pushes you and it seems to disrupt the old you, then it needs a place on your map.  Put it up there.

 

So, on this Aries new Moon, see what comes up for you.  But there is a caveat, by NO means am I suggesting you go looking for trouble!!! Please don’t.  Rather if something comes up then address it.  See who hurts your feelings, who bust you, or maybe it won’t be a person but just an act by the Universe that gets your attention and shakes you a bit.  (note to self:  How close do I live to the San Andreas fault?)    Anyway, jump on it.  Use it.  Put something on your Map that addresses that feeling inside you.

 

Why am I pushing you on this point?  Because look at those dates I have listed.  We are not going to get this crisis of opportunity again until 2011 when we have the square at 5 degrees.  After 2011 the next square will be in 2016 which will be the tightest square at only 1 degree.   Next year, 2010 when we have the Treasure map-Aries new moon, it will be 9 degrees so not nearly as intense of aspect.  You might say, “Phew!”   Yes, it is nice to have a breather but at the same time we are building towards a massive time of transitions and the best way to be prepared is by following the leads and prompts that come up within you during New Moon.

 

CARDINAL CLIMAX

 

In the summer of 2010 Pluto in Capricorn will square Uranus and Jupiter in Aries.  And it will square Saturn and Mars in Libra.   These aspects do not come up often and in fact the last time we saw something close to this was 1930/31 which was a time of huge upheavals.  The United States was in the depth of The Depression, The Dustbowl was creating havoc on large populations and typical of Uranus energy---people were on the move.  Large migrations from one area of the country, moved to other areas of the country.   Also the transitional nature of the energy at that time was not limited to the United States.   Adolph Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Franco ---they were beginning to build and climb in a very real way during ‘30/31.  God knows that fabulous four moved quickly because by ‘33 they took the world to hell in a hand basket, didn’t’ they?     

 

Of course at the same time there were people who took calculated risks that may have been uncomfortable but they saw something and moved on it.  In 1930 Gandhi marched to the Sea. He was done which India being a colony of England.  And can you blame him?   At the same time there were families who left Germany in ‘30 and ‘31 before Hitler and the Nazi party came to power in 1933.   They felt something, didn’t they?  And FDR and his new deal helped shore up many problems.  Construction continued in cities, road ways, damns large projects brought infrastructure and work to communities.  Do you see a parallel to now?   We are heading for this similar energy and there is a case to be made it might even be tougher now than in the 30's.

 

Here’s the deal, for several years astrologers all over the world have been talking about the Cardinal Climax of 2010.  You can google it and find many articles.  It is not just me, (Gosh, no!).  But why am I bringing it up on this Treasure Map New Moon? Because the center of the Cardinal climax or if you will, the engine of it is --Pluto.  The fight he is taking on next summer will involve Aries, Libra and Capricorn.  And because of such, we can see hints of the changes that will take plance next year when we watch what happens on certain new moons.  Especially, Aries lunar cycle and I do NOT believe it is an accident that Pluto will be pressing Aries Sun Moon this year before 2010 climax.  I think it is a way to prepare us.    Let me illustrate.

 

Perhaps there is a person who is divorced.  Tired, burnt out, the last thing on their mind is a new relationship.  But something comes up on New Moon.  Maybe they hear of a friend who just met someone and it stirs in them a sadness, a feeling, of “what about me?”  Or maybe they have an issue come up and it is very clear to them that they would be so much better served if they were not dealing with alone but rather had a partner.  Well, my advice is that they put an image of love on their map.   Of course this is counter to what they have been telling everyone, “I’m burnt out on love, I am not looking at this time.”   But the rawness of the new moon cannot be ignored.  Up must go the image.  And perhaps sometime this fall they meet someone.  A relationship forms.  And maybe next summer they will be more grateful than ever that they have a meaningful relationship and partnership in their life for reasons that we don’t even know now.   How fortunate for them that they got ‘rubbed’ in a way on this Aries New Moon. 

 

Or imagine the person who tells the world they are not community leaders, but something comes up on New Moon and they know it is important that they put “Leader” on their map.  Or like our example from earlier, the non materialistic person puts up “Financially Abundant” or the opposite the person who is usually preoccupied with acquiring puts up the word, “Simplify”.   How will this help later?  I don’t know all I know is it is important to stretch and do it.   If you are holding onto the status quo you are missing the lesson from Pluto.  Please don’t.

 

BUT WAIT, WHAT IF NOTHING GROSS COMES UP?

 

Having said all of the above I do want to point out that many of you will have NOTHING come up during New Moon that rattles you.   Great.  Like I said earlier, I do NOT want you looking for trouble.   Perhaps you are already in alignment for the path that will serve you best.  Perhaps you have made many changes in your life and the road is clear.   Awesome.    Build your Treasure Map like everyone else and be clear on your intent.   I am sure your results will show up beautifully.  

 

 

 

The Standoff: Saturn and Mars

 

So, we have Pluto sitting up all high and mighty in Capricorn zapping Moon/Sun/Mercury/Venus in Aries which gets them all fired up about something.  And at the same time, somber Saturn in Virgo is opposing Mars in Pisces during this lunar cycle. It will take place exactly on April 4.  But the energy will be felt on the entire lunar cycle.  What do we know about these two?   Well, Mars the warrior is fighting for the spiritual cause (Pisces) while Saturn in Virgo is saying “Not so fast.  We have details to work out.”  Expect more discussions about health care during this cycle.  It is a mess and it is huge.  The energy could also put more pressure on our food source, something fuzzy (Mars in Pisces) is in the mix.    Of course Virgo is a sign filled with government bureaucracy and Mars in Pisces will point out some major fuck up.   But whatever the issues that do come up, Saturn in Virgo thinks that the answer can be found by sorting through the details line by the line while Mars knows that the answer is to set the whole thing on fire and throw it off the bridge.   Perhaps the answer is in between?  We’ll see if we can get there.    And God forbid if someone takes this opportunity to show the world why his or her religion is the best of all. If so, they will not like the backfire results.   Of course, neither Virgo or Pisces are necessarily the signs ruling the economy but Saturn is all about business and has much to say about the economy and Mars in Pisces could be best described as a drunk pirate.   Are there more Bernie Madoff’s?  Will the bow break?

 

 On a personal level we will continue to feel we don’t have enough time to do anything.  We wake up in the morning and then about ten minutes later it is time to go to bed and we have not accomplished enough on our To-Do list.   This is the cycle to prioritize your list.  Seriously, take away the fuzzy factor in your own life.  What really needs to be done?   Have your “come to Jesus” moment about your life and say it clearly, “I am never going to fix ___ so I am moving off of it.”   Aren’t you tired of feeling preoccupied or guilty about that unfinished thing on your list?  Take the opportunity of this aspect to really assess if it needs to still be a topic in your life.   I imagine there will be many people addressing their finances one more time under this aspect and perhaps many will opt for bankruptcy.  It might be the right move to get back to center and give them the time they need again.  When I ponder this aspect and given the energy we are feeling between Pluto and all the Aries planets, plus the ongoing Uranus Saturn aspect that we are under all year….  An image comes to mind of that famous scene from NETWORK starring actor Peter Finch who plays Howard Beale

“This is not a psychotic breakdown; it's a cleansing moment of clarity” 

 

He then goes on to say

 

                        HOWARD

“Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!'

 

I can’t shake this image when I think about some of these aspects.  It might not be as dramatic as the film but certainly the energy is very similar to our astrological aspects this cycle.  So, if you feel like you just want to explode, it is not you.  It’s your inner Howard Beale speaking.

 

 

PLUTO TURNS RETROGRADE

 

About ten days after the new moon Pluto turns retrograde.  This is not an unusual activity since Pluto spends about half the year going backwards.  What I find interesting is that it turns retrograde in the same cycle that it has just bullied the moon, the sun,venus and mercury.   Clearly it goes in and bullies them on New Moon and then it dusts off its hands and announces, “I’m going to go away for awhile.”    Perhaps even he knows his power is a bit much for us.    Of course, Pluto needs to go find all the problems in the world governments once again.  Expect more scandals between April and September,  perhaps more compensations for company executives will be revealed.  There will be issues perhaps so great that it will be nice having Pluto police the villains.  And at the very least infrastructure that is flawed and messy will be revealed.   And for those people who think about things like this, watch The Federal Reserve carefully.   

 

VENUS TURNS DIRECT

On April 17 Venus will turn direct.  It has been retrograde for about six weeks and during that time a lot of us felt so unloved by Venus.  We look in the mirror and don’t see beauty.  We are not happy with our love life.  We feel so dissatisfied.   And god help everyone’s money.  Since Venus is one of the ruling planet of money.   But now thank goodness, it is going direct.   We should start to feel a bit more optimistic about love, money, beauty.   At the same time Venus is turning direct at 29 degrees Pisces which is energy on things that are mystical and unworldly but at the same time the 0 degree of Aries is being felt which puts the focus on new beginnings.    This is truly the light at dawn.   And yes, the dark days of Venus retrograde are over but any lessons you learned then should not be forgotten as you move into the new light of dawn.

 

 

SUN TRINE PLUTO

 

Interestingly, by the end of the month, all the dragons will have been slay, we will have started our life paths on a new road.  WE will be on our way.  And then right near the end, on April 23 The sun wills trine Pluto. This will be the first time we have experienced this since Pluto made its final move into Capricorn.  We should feel empowered.   Watch the news to see where the new leaders are emerging.   Watch your own self, where is your inner diamond?   Expect to see something in you that you didn’t expect to see.

It will be a powerful day to be you!

 

 

IN CLOSING

This is one of the most powerful Aries New Moons to shine upon us in a very long time. I intend to watch my focus and make sure I have my antenna up as I sort through and find the images that I want to embrace this New Year.  I might not know what those images should be until about one second before I see them. But this is where I need to be.   I hope you will clear your head and proceed gallantly as you plan your life.

New moon: Plant seeds, make calls, activate, start projects.   Activate something that will ideally lead you to more.  This is the phase where INTENT is critical.  Even if the results are not immediate, the intent is there.  You may not have all the answers or road map but you should put out your Intent.  

 

Focus on: Independence.  Breaking new ground.  Being First.  Breaking free from others in order to lead.  Out in front.  How are you leading? Where is your focus?  No time to be fuzzy.  No time to be diffused.

 

Special Focus:  

3/27  Mercury Square Pluto: Sharp tongues sharp thoughts.  Spirited debate cause rifts

3/27: Sun conj Venus:  Combustible love enflames the heart

3/28: Mercury conj Venus:  Our thoughts and our love merge. 

 

Crescent Phase

Crescent:  We will receive information, we will research a bit more, perhaps get feedback on stuff that we planted on new.  Perhaps get some information that will help down the road on a seed we planted a while ago.  We can collect some data now.  Even if you think you are not getting information, stop, and re-look at everything.  Who called you?  Even the silliest things, when they come up during Crescent are note worthy.  A parking ticket?  An argument with a spouse?  A refund check from the phone company?  All of it needs to be considered a message from the universe.  How can this information help you?

 

Focus on:  Results.  What information are we hearing that can help and support in a concrete manner the seeds we planted on new?  How are our resources for those seeds?  Is there information coming to us that we had not taken into account when we thought about our plans and wishes on New?

 

 

Special Focus:

3/30 Sun Conj Mercury: Mind and purpose in sharp alignment.

 

 

First Quarter

April 2

First quarter: We do more actions based on the information that we just received.  Or we feel our instincts guide us on something.  We pursue again.  We make another call or we see someone. We mail something.  We stir the pot again.  This can be a time when we realize that the goals we planted on New need more action from us, perhaps actions that involve breaking away.   Are there people who say they have our best interest in heart but fear us growing away from them?  Maybe we need to get help from others not the usual suspects.  Some independence may need to be exerted.

 

 

Focus on: Our feelings, our family, our cozy world.  We take actions now  that can help support our roots.  Finally we can express our feelings.  Prior to now we may have been so busy taking care of business that our feelings were put on the side.  Now our feelings indicate to us what we need to do.  Actions will be taken based on something internal in us.

 

Special focus:

4/3  Venus Square Pluto:   Love and Power are at odds.  Ouch.

4/4 Mercury sextile Jupiter:  Games and play and fun thoughts abound

Focus on: Details.  There are exact things that need to take place.  Are we doing them?  Are we going over everything twice to make sure it is accurate?  This is not the time to be sloppy.  Make sure it all makes sense.  Ask for help or pay someone to help you.

Usually emotions are up and running and for those people who perhaps did not utilize the new moon and the rest of the waxing moon, this is when emotions can get the better of us.  There can often be a big emotional break, for no other reason than to get back on track.   Some partnership will offer up some balance.  The moon is bright and full and there is no room for shadows, what is reflecting on you? 

 

Focus on:   The other person in the room with you.   Since everything went cuckoo on New Moon have you paid attention to the other person sharing your space?  Now would be the time to make some adjustments that take your partner’s opinions in account.  And really, listen to him or her.  If you don’t have a partner then ask a friend for feedback.  It is great to be focused and driven about your place in the world but if you don’t stop and take a moment to realize you are here with others than what the eff is it all worth?

Disseminating: Share information, find a teacher or someone who has more knowledge. Perhaps there was a big ol’ blow out on the full and one feels in need of support and help, this is the phase to reach out to one who knows more. This is when we find a rabbi or a minister or therapist who gives us more insight.   And of course, you too may be ready to teach and share your own information. 

 

 

Focus on:  Travel.  Stretching your borders.  Asking for help from someone who has been around the block or two.   Seeking advice from a spiritual advisor.   Judgments that may serve you or others.    Philosophical insight will help  the emotions.

Third quarter Moon

Third Quarter moon:  Now we do the final adjustments to the seeds we planted on new. The final call, the final letters to send, we follow all the trails that came up that still make sense.  And we let the other parts lay fallow. It is a time of action but wise action.  It is a time for living  “The serenity prayer”

Focus on: Business.  Executive abilities.  Sometimes it is better to higher yourself boss and then fire yourself the employee.   What part of you is no longer working?  Ditch it.  What part of you should now take over?  Put him/her in charge.

Balsamic:  We release.  We let go.  We prune, we discard, we ditch stuff. We house clean. The things that no longer work, we let them out of our life.  We release so we can clear our unconscious and dream.  We prepare our unconscious to be ready for the next New Moon. 

 

 

Focus on: Spirituality.  Metaphysics.  The woo woo.  Release it all.  Take a long hot bath and do nothing that pushes you too hard.  There comes a time when we just need to stop and rest.   REST.

 

 

Special focus:

4/21: Venus conj Mars: Lovers find each other or at the very least our love of something and our actions are in synch.
