Many years  ago I studied lunar phases with Robert Buz Myers.  It is my hope that he would be proud of my  work today.  Blessings to you, Buz! 

What is  a New Moon?

A new moon  is when the moon is between the sun and the earth and the illuminated part of  the moon is very small.  Technically,  when you look up in the sky you only see a small, skinny section of moon.       

And  the not so technical point of view?

Well,  similar to farmers and indigenous people, who have used the different phases of  the moon for eons, Astrologers also utilize the different phases of the  moon.  Certainly on the New we know it is  time to plant seeds.  But the other seven  phases are equally important.

Where  should my focus be during this next 28-day cycle? 
When we  draft a chart for the new moon we can get a sense of the energy that will be up  for processing for the next 28 days. 

Okay what is this cycle?
Last month, during  the two Cancer new moons-- Did you clear out all your emotions?  At least the stuck ones?  I hope so because you’ll get an idea why you  needed to let go of stuff as the Leo lunar phase unfolds.  Big time.

HEART OF GOLD

When it comes to New  Moons it is sometimes best to cut to the chase----- I don’t recall writing about  or seeing a Leo New Moon as powerful as this one in at least ten years!  Possibly twenty.   It is big.

Leo is strong,  courageous, proactive, heroic.  It puts  its money where its mouth is---and in times like this that says a lot.  Whether it is loud or shy, Leo attracts  attention, primary because of its own magnetism.  There is no escaping the Leo gravity.   Of course Leo rules actors and theaters but  it is not necessarily because they are center stage but also because performers  put it all on the line, they put their talent, craft and emotions for all to  see (and judge)—that takes a certain amount of bravery.  As you can imagine, “Brave” is a Leo  word. 

The planet ruling  Leo is the Sun and last time I looked the Sun was pretty important to us Earthlings.   Leo has a strong center even when it  stretches itself and Leo is inexhaustible almost under any circumstance but  perhaps it is most energized by its will to accomplish something that will last  long after he or she is gone.  A lot of  good in the world has come from Leo energy even when it is driven by a desire  to provide a notable legacy.  

Having said that--  when Leo is bad it is bad.  Bragging,  lying, out-of-check Ego, exaggerating, personalizing everything, making a  mountain out of any mole hill---this is what Leo looks like when it is bad.   For them there is no such thing as a slight  injustice, everything is HUGE---“Kill the infidels!”    If you know any Leos you are probably  nodding your head.  One minute they can  be generous and great and the perfect person to take charge and get something  done and then the next moment they are the biggest energy suck in your life  demanding all your attention as they go over some perceived injustice, over and  over and over and over and over…..again.   

Be prepared to see  this energy in the news. Some crazy out of check ego stomping all over the  place while at the same time there will be a David heroically taking down a  Goliath.  All very Leo.   I think it is somewhat funny that these Town  Halls meetings (USA) about health care have been taking place while the Sun has  been in Leo—a lot of lies and Leo theatrics.   Although, I do believe once the New Moon starts we’ll see a different  tone to the meetings, perhaps they will fizzle out or they will turn up a  notch into a real firestorm.   Especially  since Neptune is opposite Sun/Moon in Leo.    Neptune is Crazy and disillusioned and having it in the mix on new moon  will bring more cuckooness. 

On a personal level  you may find yourself passionate about something that previously only inspired  tepid emotions.  Or you could be fired up  to finally take care of something because it makes your character look bad.  “Our porch says something  about us---it is time to fix it!”   Also if you feel disillusioned about  something, hang in there, it could be for a bigger reason that something had to  melt away.  You may not know why, but if  you don’t ask "why" the answer will eventually come.

The metal associated  with Leo is gold and in the body, Leo is The Heart. Perhaps you will find  yourself looking for your own Heart of Gold (cue Neil Young).  Or you will see it in others.  Small and cheap behaviors or attitudes will  leave people cold this cycle.  Be stingy  at your own peril!

Cross me? Cross you!

Uranus has been  doing a number all year with Saturn---twisting us up one way and down the other  (“I want out” versus “I want security” ---but on this lunar phase Uranus is also  making an opposition to Mercury who is holding hands with Saturn and together  they are all squaring Mars.  Ouch.

Mars in Gemini  brings out ‘fightin’ words’ and the rhetoric will be high (Look at those Town  Hall meetings!)  But when you add Uranus,  Mercury and Saturn---well, expect fighting words to go too far.  Especially since Pluto is in a wide opposition  to Mars.  I believe we should expect a skirmish.  Or at the very least, it will be difficult to  find a cool head. In a T square there is always one part that is missing and in  this case the empty part is Sagittarius.   We will be looking for someone to step up and be teacher or a  philosopher or a wise judge.  I am  unclear if that person will show up I just know we will seek it.  

It may be that we  experience the world where people shoot off their mouth (mercury) at those  people who are demanding independence and their own uniqueness (Uranus) while  we feel a great loss (Saturn) and all are fighting (square) with Mars -----which  is most unfortunate since Mars is the ultimate warrior.  And it doesn’t help that Mars is doing his  own battle with Pluto.   There will be extra sparks around August 26th  (When the Mars/Pluto opposition is exact) but the tension is there all  cycle.  Watch your own inner skirmishes. If  you are ready to do battle then go for it.  But if you are not ready for World War 3 than try  to find your inner wise, mediator.  Those  people who have planets at late degree Sag will be sucked into something tough.  My advice?  Wear Kevlar.   

Yadda, Yadda, YOD!

Now back to my  opening statement.  What makes this moon  so extraordinary?  Bear with me because I  have to stretch your brains for a moment and get a bit astro talky.

There is something  in astrology called a YOD.  I know it is  a silly word and even though it looks like a name of a character in Star Wars,  it is pronounced YAWD.   A Yod is a  triangle that is super skinny with a defined point.  Here is one:
     

Do you see how in  this example the MOON is the pointy end of the triangle?   That is important.  Remember it.

The way a yod is  made is when two planets sextile one another (in this case Venus and Mars) and  then both those planets make a  quincunx to another planet, in this case the moon.  YODs are a rare occurrence in a chart and in  fact they are special enough to be called “The finger of God” as there is an  element of fate with them.    

All very interesting  but what does that have to do with this Leo New Moon?  Well, there are four YODS on this new moon.   If one Yod is unusual in a chart what do four mean?  It ain’t small, that is for sure. 

Back to the pointy  part of the Yod.   On the other side of  the pointy part is the base of the triangle and the base is the ENGINE of the  aspect.  Those two planets get along with  each other and they push and drive the pointy end of the Yod.  The pointy part is where we dig and dig.  If you need a visual think of an old fashion  steam shovel

The base of the  triangle is the engine and the pointy part is the shovel/bucket of the YOD.   The engine moves the bucket around and gives  it the power to dig into the ground.  The  unfortunate part is that the digging may be very difficult.  Sometimes hitting rocks sometimes hitting  gold (there is that word again).   It is  not easy work and not easy to predict what you will hit but the planet which is  pointy will give us an idea where we have to work.

Now what makes this  Leo New Moon even more interesting is that three of the pointy ends are  conjunctions.  Meaning there are two  planets on top of each other at the pointy end of three yods.   

So, our shovels are:
    Sun & Moon in  Leo.
    Jupiter & Chiron  in Aquarius
    Neptune & Chiron  in Aquarius
    North Node in  Capricorn. 

Our engines are:
    North Node &  Uranus (Cap & Pisces)
    Venus & Saturn  (Cancer & Virgo)
    Venus & Mercury  (Cancer & Virgo)
    Mars & Sun/Moon  (Gemini & Leo)

Okay, so you are  asking what does all that mean?

If I was a betting  person (perfect Leo word by the way) I would say that the energy of this lunar  cycle is going to push us in directions that force us to dig and find what is  important to us, what makes us swell with pride? What makes us a hero?  What makes us show up and do the work we need  to do to accomplish much?  (Sun &  Moon in Leo)  When I say ‘push us in  directions’ I mean that if the status quo is ‘just getting by’ whether it is  emotionally, physically, financially or any way---that will not work this lunar  phase.  For twenty eight days we will  feel pushed to ask “what do we want?”   Not in some theoretical, airy fairy way but in a concrete real way.  Perhaps a hard question will come up in your  life which pushes you to really look at your spouse or your job or your home or  some area of your life and you’ll know you cannot put it on your list to deal  with ‘some other day.’   The push will  say “That day is now”.   

At the same time we  will also be pushed to find our abundance and our healing (Jupiter & Chiron  in Aquarius).   Jupiter and Chiron have  been crossing back and forth over each other most of this year and since May  and July we have been really compelled to ask “Who is my tribe?”  “Where are my likeminded people”? “What  healing will take place when I am with my right people or my right group?”  These two planets will do one more swing at  each other in December but during this twenty eight day phase while  Jupiter/Chiron are the pointy part of the Yod expect a big time push to find our  tribe.  Again, not airy fairy but a real  push.   In the last year a lot of people  have lost their jobs or their homes and although at first blush it seems that  the energy is about MONEY or lack of MONEY.   But in truth Jupiter and Chiron are really saying, “It ain’t about the  money, People.  It is about the tribes!”  Simply said people have not been with their  right group.   There are people who are  married who need to move to the ‘single tribe’ there are people who are single  who really need to move to the ‘partnered’ tribe.  There are people who know it is time for them  to move to the ‘parent tribe’ and there are people who need to move out of the  ‘shy tribe’ and into the ‘extrovert tribe.”  And on a really basic level, there are people  who are not working with the right tribe and there are people who are simply  not living in the right town (tribe).  I  could go on and on and list other examples but you KNOW in your soul what  tribal move you need to make. And if you are unclear well, this lunar phase  will most definitely point it out.

Additionally, we  will need to find our Faith and have a healing (Neptune & Chiron in  Aquarius).   Just like Chiron and Jupiter  are a shovel so are Chiron and Neptune.   As I mentioned Jupiter and Chiron are in conjunction with each other all  year but so is Neptune.   The three of them have been in a tango going  back and forth over each other.  It is  interesting how Chiron is kicking us around a bit as we find healing in our  groups. 

Believe me I am not  one to throw around the expression “Aquarius Age” but a case can be made that  these three in conjunction is a perfect example of Aquarius Age --with or  without the tied died shirts.  In the  next twenty eight days there may be, once again, a crisis of faith but I ask  you, is there really a crisis of faith or are we being asked to redefine our  faith?   Expect something to push you to  ask “What do I believe?”  And “How can I  find hope in this world that is not of the world?”  Read that twice.  

And our final shovel  in our four yods is North Node in Capricorn.   I mentioned before (HERE) that North Node in Capricorn does not have  time for sentimentality.  It is no  nonsense and is very practical.  It finds  a way to survive anything and it can build upon anywhere as long as it has a  practical vision.   For the last two  years the north node has been in Aquarius but this month it moved into Capricorn.  I mentioned on the last lunar cycle that we  needed to get rid of our child like feelings and find our inner adult.  Well, this month we could see the value of  last month’s work.  Perhaps there will be  an offer that comes your way that demands hard work and dedication.  It won’t be easy but you can do it.  It might be an over stretch to say ‘your  survival depends on it.’  But on some  level that is what you feel.   And one caveat,  it should NOT come from fear.  It is just  a practical move that makes the most sense. 

Now what about the  engines?

We will be inspired  by energy that feels destined (north node) and spontaneous (Uranus).  We will be moved by love, money and values (Venus).  Structure and discipline(Saturn) move us. We  will learn and repot (Mercury) and desire action (Mars) in synch with our emotions  and soul (Moon & Sun).

Do you get this is  big?  Great, you are paying attention.  And for those who are not paying attention well there will probably be a big  shakeup somewhere in the world that will get your attention.   Do you remember how you hugged your children  and called friends after 9/11?  Do you  remember how you felt when you watched New Orleans get bashed by broken  levees?  Or how about the footage from  the Indian Ocean Tsunami, didn’t you say?  “Wow.   What is going on?” The Universe has a way to get our attention and this  Leo New Moon Chart is filled with opportunities to get our attention.

OTHER STUFF

So we have the Yods  this lunar cycle doing whatever the ‘eff they want to do but at the same time  we have got a great trine from Pluto (out of sign) to the Sun and Moon.  Which all I can say is ‘thank gawd’.    Pluto trine Sun/Moon will give us the  willingness to be flexible which is funny because neither the sign Leo or the  planet Pluto is flexible in nature.  But  in this YOD environment there will be a willingness to do stuff that might even  be out of character.  Later when you look  back upon this period you will see you exercised great flexibility.   We will find the resources to dig in and get  our power.   Even if we feel daunted at first we will shake  off the fear and do the work.   No  mountain is too big for a Pluto Trine Sun Moon. 

Saturn Oppose Uranus Part 3

On November 4th  we had the first opposition between Saturn in Virgo to Uranus in Pisces.  Perhaps you remember that day?  That was when the White House changed  direction in a very big way.  Then on Feb  5th we had the 2nd opposition and politicos were talking  about bank bail outs, oversight committees and trying to distinguish between a  crisis and a catastrophe (Did we ever figure that one out?) Now on September 15th  we will have our third installment of Saturn oppose Uranus.  Again, as stated earlier, these two planets  are part of the work we are doing to break free (Uranus) but at the same time find  structure (Saturn).  Of course, where you  have Pisces and Virgo in your chart will define how this is impacts you  personally. But even if you do not know your chart you are still feeling  it.  The tension is there and it will be  great this lunar cycle as it builds to September 15th.  The two will oppose each other two more times  in 2010 so if we haven’t figured out what we are doing now we have more time to  get it right. Of course, it is not a subtle aspect.  Frustrating delays, complicated choices in order  to get free.  It ain’t easy.  Take some big breaths. And as always, if you  are really stuck-- go to the Virgo energy and look at your daily schedule and  maintenance.  How is your calendar? How  is your weight? How is your daily work?   If you can’t fix the bigger picture fix the smaller picture.   Get your diet and exercise routine  together. 

And if you have not  got your Pisces spiritual practices together, start it now.  Daily prayer, meditation, affirmations will  do you a world of good.  Supporting the  need for a tight spiritual ship is also the fact that Neptune is opposed  Sun/Moon on this new moon.  Neptune  always appears to dissolve things when it touches them.  This is very frustrating and troubling---at  first.  But what we do with this and how  we find our inner resolve says more about us than the actual loss.   

    “What the ‘eff----et tu,  Mercury?”

And if all of what  is happening is not enough—we have a Mercury retrograde.  I know, I know. I hate  even writing those words but God in his infinite wisdom has really decided to  mess with us by messing up our communication.   Sigh.
    You know the drill  but we’ll go over it again.    

On September 7 at  12:45am (EDT) Mercury will retrograde in the sign Libra until September 29  (9:13am EDT).   I mentioned back in  February and May that  I think the  Mercury Retrogrades in Air signs are not nearly as painful as the retrogrades  in the other elements.   I have been politely told by some of my  friends that I am WRONG!  For some people  these air sign Mercury retros have been dreadful (I think for those with Natal Mercury  in an air sign).  Of course, when all our  technical things break down (as they often do in a Mercury retrograde) it is  hard not to think that you are personally being punished by Spirit.   Let me remind you, we are all in this  together--- you are not being personally whipped.  It is a group whipping…we are all getting it.

When double checking the Sabian symbol for the  retrograde at 06 Libra 13 ---it reads “A woman feeding chickens and protecting them  from the hawks.”  The key word is  shrewdness.    Obviously, in Libra this retrograde will  have more to do with our relationships not just our partners but all relationships.  How are we in  relationship?  Are we just and fair?  Are we reactionary? Are we thoughtful?  Are we too thoughtful and not enough  actions?  We will explore this a lot  during the three weeks of the retrograde.
    As always you should  copy your hard drive before the retrograde, do all your big business stuff  before it.  Try to avoid signing  contracts during the period.  But when  all the craziness hits, don’t have a huge break down, consider that it came up  to help you.   I can’t say how only you  know that.   After the retrograde it will  be more clear of course by that time you’ll be drunk on Bloody Marys. 

Pluto turns direct

On September 11  Pluto will turn direct in Capricorn at 0 degrees 40.  As always Pluto spends about half the year in  a retrograde motion.  It has been going  backwards since  April 4th.  We will feel the energy change and it will be  interesting to see how this bears on government and businesses.   Remember, Capricorn is all about Government  agencies and banks and corporation. Pluto retro has been so apparent as it  seems like everyone tries to get up and roll again but it just feels stalled.  There is this overall feeling that things  don’t feel right.  It is possible when  Pluto turns direct there will be another minor assault on Wall Street as Pluto  sheds more dead weight.  Perhaps more  bankruptcies, companies close which no longer serve.  There may be a little better flow for those  companies that seem real and truly vital.   But we won’t know until Pluto turns around.  Of course as Pluto turns direct it is heading  for the Cardinal Climax next year.   Yikes.  So watch and see what  comes up in your personal life after Pluto turns direct. It might be giving you  a heads up as to what to expect next summer.   Achtung!

In Conclusion:
    I know that a lot of  you are probably exhausted from just reading this report.  Imagine how I feel writing it!  But if you can muster up your energy and  clear your head you’ll be ready for the rockin’ and rollin’ we are about to  do.  I have no idea what it is going to  look like but I know we are being called to find our inner hero.   Is it okay to live your life small and make  excuses for it?  Most of the year you can  lie and tell yourself it is okay that you are not living to your  potential.  But it will be impossible to  tell those lies to yourself this lunar cycle.    And I’m not sitting over here smugly removed from this process.  I have got to do it too.  Together let’s ..B-R-E-A-T-H-E!

The Eight Phases

NEW MOON

August 20 6:01am (EDT)
    27 Leo 31

New moon: Plant seeds, make calls, activate, start  projects.   Activate something that will  ideally lead you to more.  This is the  phase where INTENT is critical.  Even if  the results are not immediate, the intent is there.  You may not have all the answers or road map  but you should put your Intent out there.   Remember no matter how small it is still the INTENT that is important.  

Focus on  Pride, self esteem, shining like a star, being a leader, putting yourself  out there, breaking from the crowd. Where are you a hero?  Does your outer world match your inner  world?  Why not?  Where is your self esteem?  How big is your heart with others and with  yourself?  Do you keep yourself  small?  Why? Does it still work for you?  Tell the truth.

Special focus

8/21 (Mercury/Uranus) Genius or chaotic electric thoughts.

8/22 Sun enters Virgo.  With a  Virgo—just remembering their birthday is a gift enough. Thoughtfulness goes far  with them.

CRESCENT  PHASE

Crescent:  We  will receive information, we will research a bit more, perhaps get feedback on  stuff that we planted on new.  Perhaps  get some information that will help down the road on a seed we planted a while  ago.  We can collect some data now.  Even if you think you are not getting  information, stop, and re-look at everything.   Who called you?  Even the silliest  things, when they come up during Crescent are note worthy.  A parking ticket?  An argument with a spouse?  A refund check from the phone company?  All of it needs to be considered a message  from the universe.  How can this  information help you?

Focus on:  Information  comes in regarding your relationships.   Partners share info with you, are you hearing them?  How is the world responding to the seeds you  planted?  Is it time to get a partner to  share the work? Who can be your partner?   How do you find balance?  What is  the world telling you about your ability to be measured?

First  Quarter Moon

August 27 7:42am (EDT)

First quarter: We do more actions based on the information  that we just received.  Or we feel our  instincts guide us on something.  We  pursue again.  We make another call or we  see someone. We mail something.  We stir  the pot again.  This can be a time when  we realize that the goals we planted on New need more action from us, perhaps  actions that involve breaking away.   Are  there people who say they have our best interest in heart but fear us growing  away from them?  Maybe we need to get  help from others not the usual suspects.   Some independence may need to be exerted.

Focus on:  Actions we take should bridge us to another  group.  We reach out to foreigners (as  defined by you), other classes. Teachers or wise sages can help.  How would the seeds we planted on new benefit  by some smart wise counseling?  Rabbis,  priests someone spiritual can be helpful.

    8/28:  (Mercury/Venus) Fun & lively. Beep, beep let’s play.
    8/30: (Moon/sun)  Great energy and good day to shine.

Gibbous  Moon

August 31,   10:05am

Gibbous:  We refine our  information.  We pick and choose, we  discriminate, we organize, we tend to be ‘virgo’ like.  We sort through details.  Have we missed something?  How are we sifting through the information?  Go back and make sure something hasn’t been  neglected.  Refine our actions. 

Focus on:  What adjustments can we make that put us on a  higher level?  Are we thinking big  enough?  Is there a practical move we can  make that puts us on the next place?  Can  we chill out our emotions and refine our seeds?

Special focus:
    9/3: (mercury/mars)  shoot off your mouth and pay for it.

Full  Moon
    September  4 12:02pm  

12 Pisces 15

Full Moon:  We  make the needed adjustments on the things we planted. Usually emotions are up  and running and for those people who perhaps did not utilize the new moon and  the rest of the waxing moon, this is when emotions can get the better of  us.  There can often be a big emotional  break, for no other reason than to get back on track.   Some partnership will offer up some  balance.  The moon is bright and full and  there is no room for shadows, what is reflecting on you? 

Focus on:   Have  we forgotten the spiritual part of our life?   Is there place for it?  If we are  missing it, it will become glaring apparent.   Watch our thoughts and see how often we think God is punishing us.  What if you can no longer be a victim in  thought or action, how will that change your life?  How would it change your seeds you planted on  new moon?  Do you get drama from telling  the awful stories that surround you?  Is  it tiring you out?  Thought so.

    9/7 12:45am Mercury  turns retrograde (see above)
    9/11 (Venus/Jupiter)  over indulgence hurts but desired

Disseminating
    September 8 8:03am (EDT)

Disseminating: Share information, find a teacher or  someone who has more knowledge. Perhaps there was a big ol’ blow out on the  full and one feels in need of support and help, this is the phase to reach out  to one who knows more. This is when we find a rabbi or a minister or therapist  who gives us more insight.   And of  course, you too may be ready to teach and share your own information. 

Focus on:   We  share practical insights. We find support that offers us concrete help.  We reach out beyond our circle or parish to  get real results.   We continue to put  our nose to the grindstone but we share our skills.

Third Quarter Phase
    September 11 10:14pm

Third Quarter moon:  Now  we do the final adjustments to the seeds we planted on new. The final call, the  final letters to send, we follow all the trails that came up that still make  sense.  And we let the other parts lay  fallow. It is a time of action but wise action.   It is a time for living  “The  serenity prayer”

    to accept the things
    I cannot change Courage to change the
    things I can, and the
    Wisdom to know the difference.

Focus on: We lighten up as we do the final moves on  the seeds we planted.  How can we  communicate about the seeds we planted? How can neighbors or siblings help  us?  How are we fitting into the world  around us and how does it match our seeds that we planted?  What actions can we take now that reconcile  our seeds with our communication? If you  planted a seed on new moon that you want to feel  healthy then why are we still saying, “I’m so sick of….”  Watch your words.
