THE FOOL- MAJOR ARCANA

The Fool is the number zero in the Major Arcana series, and invokes the mysticism of this “number that is not a number”. The shape of the zero reminds us of the “egg of possibility”. The Fool’s journey begins by trusting the unknown.

In the Rider Waite tarot deck The Fool is portrayed with a sack over his shoulder and a dog at his heels. He is about to take a “the leap of faith” and jump into the Great Mystery.

In Greek mythology, Dionysius, the “twice born god”, represents The Fool. Though his first birth was on earth his second birth was in the underworld! Are Dionysius’s strong impulses coming from his rational or his irrational side? We will never know…but if we too, follow our natural instincts, he promises that we will shake free the shackles of our former selves and be reborn.

In Jungian Archetypes, The Fool is the “Divine Child”. His vulnerability is also his strength. His child-like “foolishness” is also his wisdom.

The Fool reminds us to “TAKE THE LEAP.”
