What is a New Moon?

 

A new moon is when the moon is between the sun and the earth and the illuminated part of the moon is very small.   Technically, when you look up in the sky you only see a small, skinny section of moon.       

 

And the not so technical point of view?

 

Well, similar to farmers and indigenous people, who have used the different phases of the moon for eons, Astrologers also utilize the different phases of the moon.  Certainly on the New we know it is time to plant seeds.  But the other seven phases are equally important.

 

 

Where should my focus be during this next 28-day cycle?

When we draft a chart for the new moon we can get a sense of the energy that will be up for processing for the next 28 days. 

 

Okay what is this cycle?

 

If you have been running around like a chicken with its head cut off, well, this will be a great lunar cycle to put your head back on and find out who cut if off in the first place.  And you mean business.

 

 

 

Capricorn the Saving Grace  Goat

 

We have just wrapped up probably one of the most intense, fast, crazy 28 days ever to hit this planet, right?  This particular  Sag Lunar phase was extraordinarily Sag, full of cheer, booze, events, rushing, parties--basically you name the indulgence and we had too much of it!  Thank god that is over! And now we are ready for the genius of Capricorn. 

 

Quiet, subdued, subtle, wise, cautious, fatherly, this is the Lunar phase of Capricorn.  Do you know any Caps?  They are not what you would call a party animal. Ha! Far from it. They are hard working and they are smart with their money.  They love business and they are happiest with structured time.  Unstructured time makes them nervous.  They fear they might forget something, they fear they might spend unexpected money, they fear they might have to do something out of their comfort zone. They like orderliness.  Not in a Virgo OCD way, but just in a comfortable structured way. 

 

This is a welcome respite from the last month where everyone on this planet has a hangover.  Even if we don’t drink, we could have spent too much. Or if we didn’t spend on the holidays or booze our way through them, perhaps we got wrapped up in a fervor state over our beliefs and opinions (another Sag area).  Now we need to put all of it to bed. It’s time for Capricorn’s cool approach to the world.  And you better be put on notice Waste will not be tolerated!!

 

 

How is our money?

 

This is of course one of the ickiest conversations anyone can have with anyone, honestly, people will talk about their sex life faster than they’ll talk about their IRA accounts.  But this lunar phase the Sun/Moon in Capricorn are not under heavy aspects and you should make hay while the sun is shining.  Meaning?  This is absolutely the perfect time to look at your dough. How is it?  How will it grow?  Are you feeling comfortable with your investments?  Do you even have a plan? 

 

And if you do not have a substantial savings account why?  This is not a rhetorical question, this is a real question.  Ask yourself, is your job not paying you enough?  What can you do to get more money from it?  You may need to ask, “Why does my company only think I’m worth ____?”   This does not mean you slam the door and never return.  That would hardly be a wise Capricorn move.  Rather, if your company does not think you are worth more than you need to see if there is something you can do on your own to improve the situation.  Do you need to take some classes so that you qualify for a raise? Do you need to find your old transcripts from some universities or local colleges whom you forgot you took classes?  Do you need to talk with your boss about a new area for you to take over?  But this should not be expansion for the sake of expansion; this really should be an area that is truly a better match for you.  And yes, if your boss and your company are taking advantage of you and don’t give a fig about you and your real skills then you should get yourself to Monster.com and put the word out. Or ask around see if you can find a head hunter.  Take some interviews.  Don’t be flippant and just quit, now is the time to plan your escape.

 

And what about an Online business? Is there something you can offer online that will bring in more money into your life?  And what about a budget?  Where can you trim?  Also, do you have some things in your closets or your attic that need to be sold on ebay?  Capricorn is not a particularly sentimental sign and now would be a good time to get rid of stuff.  This is why God created Ebay.

 

 

The Good Father

 

Listen, not everyone can have an ideal father.  In fact, probably many,(if not most of us) had a crappy dad.  But let’s put all that behind us and focus on the next 28 days.  The Sun and Moon in Capricorn is demanding that we really find our inner dad.   How can you be the best father to you right now?  Not in a woo-woo, lets hug ourselves in front of the mirror and talk about how much we love ourselves.  That is so NOT Capricorn.  What I’m talking about is truly find your inner father and get to the business of your life.  What does that mean?  Well, ask yourself, if you have an imaginary Great Dad and he walked into your life what would this Great dad say?  Would he like the way the house is set up?  Is there waste? Are the lights wasting energy?  Are there drafts? Where is the sealant?  

 

Are people in your family planning summer vacations now that are really a waste of money?  Would you be better served putting on a new roof?  How about taking that money and build a second bathroom?  Are there better routes for some for some of the services you are paying? Do you need Turbo Tax instead of going to your accountant? Or perhaps you are using Turbo Tax and it appears now you would be better served going to an accountant.  The point is that you should give it your attention. 

 

Or are you paying for a baby sitter but maybe it’s time for you and your neighbor to share the cost of one sitter?  The ideal smart great Dad is always thinking on his feet.  He is cool. He is not emotional. He is smart.  He is wise.  Dig in and find that voice.  It is going to serve you in the long run. Especially this year as Pluto makes the move from Sag to Capricorn.  More on that later. But in the meantime, look at your life and get your ‘dad’ there to help you.

 

And a bit more Genius

 

While we are busy finding our inner dads and looking at our life with a suspiciousness eye that seems to say, “hmm maybe we could be doing something better.”  There will be a bit of genius in the air.  The Sun and Moon in Capricorn are making a beautiful aspect with Uranus.  Uranus can be such a renegade planet.  Demanding we take a left turn for no other reason than to screw around with the day because clearly Uranus has Impulse control issues.  But the other thing to Uranus is that it is genius. It rules electricity and the old cartoon image of a light bulb on top of someone’s head when they have a bright idea is perfectly URANUS.  We will be having all kinds of light bulbs going off for the next 28 days.  Some of them will have no traction but some of them will definitely take you into new territory and be very fruitful.  I would not waste one idea.  Follow through on them and if they aren’t good, don’t worry about them, they’ll disappear on their own. But if they are good, you’ll know and they will save you later.  The genius in the air is palpable. 

 

Additionally, Mercury is just barely into Aquarius on this New Moon. And Aquarius is the genius sign, so we have got the genius planet making a beautiful aspect to the sun and moon in Capricorn and we have got Mercury in the genius sign of Aquarius.  What makes this worthy of discussion is the fact that had the new moon taken place an hour or two earlier Mercury would have been in Capricorn but instead it is almost like this New Moon waited to be ‘born’ after Mercury shifted into Aquarius.  It appears that the Cap Moon and Sun are well aware of their strong suit, meaning they know they love to be structured, they love orderliness, they love paying their bills on time, they love going to work, they love making their money work for them, they love business..sure they love all that because it is visionary thinking in a worldly way.   A concrete way. 

 

But something about this new moon has told Sun and Moon in Capricorn that they need vision in an unworldly way.  Something from out of their world. And that can only come from either Aquarius energy or Uranus energy.  And we have both this cycle.  Clearly, Genius is in play.

 

I don’t care if you are as dumb as dirt, and you are not, since you are reading this article, but if you were, you still have genius thoughts.  Let them come out and follow up on them this cycle.   You will need it.

Just so you all know, the New Hampshire Primary is being held on New Moon.  There may be some long term vision on this Tuesday primary that will make sense in November when we have the General Election.  Leaders may come out of the crowd in New Hampshire and never look back as they storm ahead.  Whether they are good for the nation or not, who knows?  Since the general election will be held while Pluto is in Sag (for the last time), it remains unclear to me.  Alas.

Mercury Retrograde

 

Yes, there will be a mercury retrograde this lunar phase. You know the drill; there are missteps with letters, missteps with computers, and missteps with banking calculations.

 

You think you have packed everything for your weekend seminar and no you left your important article in your computer at your desk and no one is there on Saturday to email it to you.  It is that headachy stuff.  Lord, just talking about it is enough to make someone reach for the aspirin.

 

But the interesting news to me about this Mercury retrograde is that it is taking place a few days after Pluto goes into Capricorn.  I think this is important.  Everyone on the planet will feel the transit as Pluto makes its big move. The bell will be rung.  And we are going to be living our life feeling something but probably not able to pinpoint it. Something will feel different.  And then a few days later our mind (ruled by mercury) will slow down.  We will feel like we have left something important some place. If you are a woman, it will feel like you left your purse someplace.  You know that feeling of “missing” that happens when you put your purse down. Or you men, how about your keys?  You know when you realize your keys are not where you left them?  That feeling?  That is exactly what we are going to feel from January 25 until January 28^th and it is because of that, we will actually welcome the Mercury retrograde. Our brain needs to slow down and figure out how to process this new information coming in. 

 

 

 

And now the big one!

 

Pluto moves into Capricorn.

 

Astrologers have been talking about Pluto’s transit from Sag into Cap for several years now. And there really is no way to say this without hitting you on the head—sorry--- but everyone needs to get ready for a big ride.  It will be in the sign for about 18 years and it is going to be a doozey. 

 

It is no one’s fault it is just the way Pluto behaves when it goes into a sign.  Pluto looks for the weakest link of the chain and it appears to destroy it. Let’s look at the last 14 years while Pluto has transited Sagittarius.   Right around the time Pluto went into Sag we had OJ and his trial. Shortly thereafter we had Columbine.  Later we had one ridiculous election after another, with the Media playing a somewhat destructive hand in the outcome (Sag rules media) and of course we had 9/11 and all kinds of perfectly Sag encounters of a destructive manner from  Tsunamis and hurricanes. Again, all with media coverage, some of it good some of it basically yellow journalism.  Sigh.  This is the way Pluto works.  It goes into a sign and it appears to destroy it.  

 

Now we are not out of the woods with Pluto in Sag and even though Pluto is going to move into Capricorn this month, later in the year it will retrograde and move back into Sag.  So we have one more go of it to help our schools, to expand religious toleration, to strengthen media outlets (look how the cyber world has helped) and sure we might even be able to take the fix out of fixing our elections.  Perhaps.

 

But what we do know is that this month Pluto will move into Capricorn and that means, the economy, infrastructure, businesses, Wall Street, CEOS, banks are all put on notice.   Everyone should expect a recession or depression.  And even if it does not look like the Great Depression (I’ve never understood why they called it “great”) of the 1930s’ be prepared for more foreclosures, businesses going under and people in general needing to tighten their belts. There will be people moving in with families or friends and in general the way we live with each other will be open for change.  These 18 years are going to be bumpy but in particular the first 5 years will be quite hard. 

 

This does not mean we will be depressed for 18 years. It just means that the fat days of Pluto in Sag are over.  To paint this picture even clearer, do you know how you feel right now, like you want to tighten up and fly?  Weren’t those last 28 days during the Sag phase too much?  Well pretend you are Pluto who has just spent not days in Sag but years---in fact 14 years in Sag!   Wouldn’t you want to get sober?  That is what is happening. 

 

And it is not just the United States.  This is a world event.  We are all getting ready to make some shifts. And be expecting revolutions. This is no day in the country transit.  The last time Pluto was in Capricorn George Washington was having dinner with Thomas Jefferson.  And they weren’t just saying “pass the squab.”

 

Is there really any reason for some of you to waste oil and drive to an office? Is there really a reason for you guys to waste oil and money while you drive your son or daughter to a private school on the other side of town?  Is there really any reason for you to buy another plastic piece of something in Target or Walmart or Kmart or whatever mart that will break and be useless within a year?  That is the stuff that Pluto is going to fix. And the best way to fix it is probably to smash it. And the way to smash it is to go after the money.  Oh, sure, look to the Federal Government to put some up some firewalls in the next couple of months to help soften this blow but when you hear about those bailouts ask yourself if they really can make a difference in the long run.  If your gut says “no”.  Then guess what?  Your gut is probably right.

 

By next time this year when Pluto has finished its final retrograde in Sag, the Market will be a different animal.  If you are a stock broker and you are reading this, you know what I’m talking about.  And if you are in Hedge Funds—well you do the math.

 

Small note

 

 

I will say it now, that I think it is not an accident that Pluto is moving into Capricorn during the Capricorn lunar phase.  I think we are getting help from Spirit.  If you do not understand me, let me clarify.  Pluto could make this move into Capricorn at any time in the year.  It could have been during the summer on a hot Leo day.  It could have been in October during Libra. It could have been in June during Gemini lunar phase. But no, it is happening now, during a Capricorn lunar phase. In my mind this will help us.  During Capricorn we want to conserve, we want to tighten our belts. We want to make moves that support our world without destroying others. We want to be sensible. This is the power of this time of the year and under this energy Pluto will slip out of Sag and into Capricorn.  Somehow we will be able to process the energy easier. Or if you will, since we’re already dressed for the cold weather we can go ahead and let the door blow open.

 

One more time, if you are wasting time, money and resources anywhere in your life, change it during this phase, you will thank me later.

Capricorn new moon is the final push on our Treasure Maps. Some of you will find some things on your map coming to you effortlessly or others will be re-energized and will stir the pot in a big way so that your visions will come true.  Dust off the map and take a look!

New moon: Plant seeds, make calls, activate, start projects.   Activate something that will ideally lead you to more.  This is the phase where INTENT is critical.  Even if the results are not immediate, the intent is there.  You may not have all the answers or road map but you should put out your Intent.  

 

 

Focus on: Your self in the greater world.  Where do you fit in? Does the world know your skills and talents? Why not?  Now you will be able to project yourself a bit more. Put yourself out there.  Clarify how you want to be a part of society and the greater world in general.  Sure your family knows you, but what about the world?

Crescent Moon

 

 

Crescent:  We will receive information, we will research a bit more, perhaps get feedback on stuff that we planted on new.  Perhaps get some information that will help down the road on a seed we planted a while ago.  We can collect some data now.  Even if you think you are not getting information, stop, and re-look at everything.  Who called you?  Even the silliest things, when they come up during Crescent are note worthy.  A parking ticket?  An argument with a spouse?  A refund check from the phone company?  All of it needs to be considered a message from the universe.  How can this information help you?

 

 

Focus on: Things spiritual things metaphysical.  If you are getting information from your physical world, ask yourself if God or Spirit is also sending you a message? What is he/she saying?  A casual conversation with a perfect stranger might be a message from spirit or an angel. 

 

 

January 13

Mercury enters Shadow

 

Mercury goes into shadow.

What the heck does that mean?  In about two weeks Mercury will be retrograding and unless you lived in a hole for most of your life, you have likely heard about Mercury retrogrades. This is when things get really chaotic and things break and it just is when things get confusing and you want to scream, “Arrgh!”    Okay that is in two weeks but in the meantime Mercury has just crossed the point that it will revisit in about six weeks when it has finished going backwards and gets back to this point in the road again.  Just note that stuff that comes up now and for the next few weeks because it may come back for a revisit by March 10 when the shadowy period ends.

First Quarter Moon

 

First quarter: We do more actions based on the information that we just received.  Or we feel our instincts guide us on something.  We pursue again.  We make another call or we see someone. We mail something.  We stir the pot again.  This can be a time when we realize that the goals we planted on New need more action from us, perhaps actions that involve breaking away.   Are there people who say they have our best interest in heart but fear us growing away from them?  Maybe we need to get help from others not the usual suspects.  Some independence may need to be exerted.

 

 

Focus on:  Self preservation.  Act out in the world to preserve you or the things you care about.  What are you doing out in the world?  How are you presenting yourself? Are you appearing like you need a partner?  Do you really need a partner?  Are you more self sufficient than you lead people to believe?   Why do you lie about it?  Start acting on stuff that puts you out there and for Heavens sake if you have leadership ability now would be the time to get out there.  What are you waiting for?

Gibbous:  We refine our information.  We pick and choose, we discriminate, we organize, we tend to be ‘virgo’ like.  We sort through details.  Have we missed something?  How are we sifting through the information?  Go back and make sure something hasn’t been neglected.  Refine our actions. 

 

Focus on: Mind and mental abilities.  This gibbous moon is an exceptional moon to find things.  Something you forgot about comes back to be put back into your life.  If you have been careless about something and you lost it, it will come back now.  Will you be careless again?  And if it is time to trim, trim the fat literally and figuratively, your eye on this moon will know exactly how to trim.

Full Moon

 

 

Full Moon:  We make the needed adjustments on the things we planted. Usually emotions are up and running and for those people who perhaps did not utilize the new moon and the rest of the waxing moon, this is when emotions can get the better of us.  There can often be a big emotional break, for no other reason than to get back on track.   Some partnership will offer up some balance.  The moon is bright and full and there is no room for shadows, what is reflecting on you? 

 

Focus on: Shining like a star.  The greatest person in your life is the person in your mirror.  How are you taking care of that person?  How are you supporting that person?  If you need to make adjustments in your life you probably are not really taking care of the person in the mirror. And this is does not mean EGO. This means taking care of self esteem.  Remember this equation:  Low Self Esteem = high ego;  High Self Esteem = low ego.  Are you throwing a scene with someone because they have done something that rattles your ego?  Well fix your self esteem first before you get into it with anyone else.  And take responsibility for your part of this dance.

Disseminating Moon

 

Disseminating: Share information, find a teacher or someone who has more knowledge. Perhaps there was a big ol’ blow out on the full and one feels in need of support and help, this is the phase to reach out to one who knows more. This is when we find a rabbi or a minister or therapist who gives us more insight.   And of course, you too may be ready to teach and share your own information. 

 

Focus on:  health and schedule.  Do you need a time manager to come in and give you some help? Can they come up with some ideas that will  help you manage your life better?  Turn to an expert for anything that will help your daily life.  If you have not hired a cleaning person or babysitter put the word out there that you are looking for help but don’t hire anyone yet, wait until mercury retrograde is completed but if you need someone to help you in any way, now is the time to put the word out that you are looking!

Earlier in this article I spoke more about Mercury’s retrograde. And as I said, you probably all know what this means.  You need to plan more time to get anywhere because you will probably have delays.  Traffic jams at unexpected corners.  You think you are meeting someone at two on Tuesday they think it is three on Wednesday.  Send follow up emails for any date.  Not a great time to buy new stuff. Of course if you are replacing stuff, it probably is because the item really needed to be retired awhile ago. But if it is just a willy nilly purchase---skip it.  Save your money and your time and wait for Mercury to go direct.  Watch your tongue and watch your tone.

 

Now on the other hand, this is a great time to finally take care of things that have been on your To-Do list.  Download some of the stuff for your accountant.  Find the receipts.  Use Quicken.  Go over your phone book and finally put the phone numbers in your blackberry that you have wanted to do for months.  Do that cleanup work stuff that you have been wanting to skip for months.  Time’s up! 

 

Additionally, since this is coming up after Pluto’s move into Capricorn you probably also just need a rest. Don’t beat yourself up if you are not moving at a top notch speed. Take your life and tasks, beat by beat. Take a nap for godsake.  Move at the pace that feels right for your brain.  You do not have to race anywhere!

Third Quarter Moon

 

Third Quarter moon:  Now we do the final adjustments to the seeds we planted on new. The final call, the final letters to send, we follow all the trails that came up that still make sense.  And we let the other parts lay fallow. It is a time of action but wise action.  It is a time for living  “The serenity prayer”

Wisdom to know the difference.

 

 

Focus on:  Money and resources.   How are your actions and there should be some final type actions made by you to go towards your goals. You may need to lay out some cash but better to pay the pros then waste your valuable time and energy.  Reach out and get help.  Do you have any idea how big are your resources? Do you think it is just you and your spouse? Or just you and your family that is your source of resources?  You are mistaken; your world is much bigger.  Scope it out now.

Hurray! That is over.  Since November 15^th our drive and our ‘maleness’ has been so weak and faint.  It is not that we haven’t been doing stuff or taking care of business since November it just has felt like we haven’t moved that far.  Mars the warrior has been retrograded for 3 months and it feels so lame.  Imagine General Patton in his 4 star jeep going backwards for 3 months. Shit, that is enough to make him turn over in his grave.  But finally we get to be warriors again.  We needed to be quiet apparently for Pluto’s final days in Sag and now that it is in Capricorn spirit is letting us have our warrior again!  Hurray.  Of course, it is in the sign Gemini which is a mental sign. Darn. Why can’t it be in a sign we can really dig in on, like Taurus or Scorpio?  Instead the warrior is in our heads. But listen, better for us to figure out what is next in our life by a strategizing our game plan in the safety our minds and then later in March when it moves into Cancer we can dig in and get going.  Until then, gentlemen start your brains!

Balsamic:  We release.  We let go.  We prune, we discard, we ditch stuff. We house clean. The things that no longer work, we let them out of our life.  We release so we can clear our unconscious and dream.  We prepare our unconscious to be ready for the next New Moon. 

 

Focus on: Our bigotry. Our big ideas. Our big beliefs.  Release, release.  Are they serving us?  Great. If not, release them.  Shift out of our need to know everything.  Who appointed us God? WE are on the need to know basis when it comes to Spirit’s plans.  So, just get over it.  Take yourself to the spa and soak.  Start vibing your way to new moon –it is almost here!
