What is a New Moon?

 

A new moon is when the moon is between the sun and the earth and the illuminated part of the moon is very small.   Technically, when you look up in the sky you only see a small, skinny section of moon.       

 

And the not so technical point of view?

 

Well, similar to farmers and indigenous people, who have used the different phases of the moon for eons, Astrologers also utilize the different phases of the moon.  Certainly on the New we know it is time to plant seeds.  But the other seven phases are equally important.

 

 

Where should my focus be during this next 28-day cycle?

When we draft a chart for the new moon we can get a sense of the energy that will be up for processing for the next 28 days. 

 

Okay what is this cycle?

Happy Days! We get a break.  The question is, will we know what do to with it?

 

 

“Yippee Skippee”, Taurus to the rescue.

 

Let’s face it for the last year we have had some doozey of new moons.  Some of them have had nice aspects and perks and as your guide I have always encouraged you to make the most of those perks.  But let’s also face it; along with nice moons we have also had some of the most ‘effed up new moons.  I mean the kind that make you go running for oral surgery because removing dead gums would be less painful than those new moons.  But of course, even in those tough moons I have always encouraged you to find the bounty. 

 

Well, today I am happy to say that this Taurus New Moon has a lot of good energy.  Not qualified in a “kind of good, if you look beyond this or that”.  No, this is very abundant energy that we should all feel.  Or if it is not literally abundant we will feel  positive about our resources. Which is good news.

 

Taurus is strong and sure.  Rarely wavers.  Very patient and knows how to take its time to get what it wants.  It is the foundation sign.  No tall sky scraper can exist without some strong foundations and Taurus is such a foundation. 

 

The New Moon this month is so extraordinary that we will all be looking at our life and wondering, “Hmm, where do I need a new foundation?”  And instead of getting scared and thinking, “How can I get that I am too small”, “too poor”, and even (heaven forbid) “too unlucky” to deserve such a beautiful foundation-- instead of that negative thinking we will actually consider, “Hmm--maybe I can have it too, just like everyone else”.  

 

And in case you didn’t know, positive outlook is a positive resource.  My suggestion?  Embrace it!

 

Featherbed, anyone?

 

The Sun and the Moon in Earthy Taurus are making a lovely trine to Jupiter in Capricorn and while that is going on they also have a conjunction with beautiful Venus.  This scene is so delicious that Jove himself may come down from Mt Olympus just to partake in the fun.

 

Taurus is practical and comforted oriented.  They love great long naps under the softest blanket made out of the most expensive silks.  Luxurious templates are their favorite choices.   And in this case, as Sun and Moon fall into the softest featherbed, gorgeous Venus is ready to help them with anything creative, beautiful, and indulgent.  She will provide them with everything. And if by chance she misses something, Jupiter who is the king of all kings and sitting in his extraordinary castle in Capricorn where he has the most dutiful staff will be ready to help the triumvirate, “Let me send you my number one butler and my best architect to build you anything you want.” 

 

Yes the moon is just that good.  Now what are you going to do it with it?  You have some choices----

 

Hardworking or lazy; Resourceful or Indulgent 

 

Like every sign there is a high side and a low side and with Taurus their high side is that they are hard working, industrious, patient and dedicated. They are loyal and when they set their mind to something they can accomplish much.  At the same time they can also be the laziest tribe around.  Too lazy to leave their house even if there was an alien landing on the roof across the street, “What does that have to do with me?” 

 

They can also beat their head against the wall doing the same thing over and over because they are so dedicated to the image in their mind.  They have no idea that there is an easier path and one with possibly a more fruitful result-- if they only give up their perceptions.  But it is so hard for Taurus to give up or release anything—including an idea in their head.   

 

Another high side of Taurus is their resourcefulness.  Even in a rationed environment where it appears there is none--they can find the only cup of sugar or the one gallon of gas.   Their talent is amazing for tapping resources.  And yes, they can get blood from a turnip.

 

And on the low side? Taurus can be extravagant to the nth degree.   They waste money on things the average Joe would never consider.  They throw a party when someone opens a door.  They spend all their cash on an outfit-to-die-for and have no money for rent.  Their compass goes crazy when the price tag is high.  Sadly they can fall for the old trick, “If it is expensive it must be good.”   Or “If others want it, it must be good.”  Later when they get it, they realize, “Whoops, I sort of got that one wrong.”

 

As this month unravels we will probably find ourselves drawn to both the high and the low sides of Taurus.  Just remember---moderation!

 

 

A wealth of resources

 

So, this new moon is rich with a lot of possibilities.  Expect to hear a lot about money.  The stock market should have a mini bull run, how perfect for Taurus!  And the crashing sound of real estate may go mute for the month.  I’m not saying the economy is out of the woods.  It is not. But this is a month where we may get a ‘get out jail for free’.  What happens the rest of the summer or fall?   More falling.  But right now let’s make hay where it counts.  Find your resources!

 

If you have been down and depressed and unsure about your future, especially financially speaking, take this new moon to look at your resources.  I mean ALL of you resources.

 

Taurus is associated with banks and money and cash boxes and things that you can carry which are valuable.  Jewelry, rings, items from an estate sale all good Taurus items.  

When is the last time you went to an estate sale?  Now would be the time to pick up some real bargains that will benefit you much later down the road. 

 

And if you are unhappy with your bank, now would be the time to make the switch.  For some people this simply means finally going to your local bank and getting a safe deposit box.  And put those things that have been of concern to you and you have felt vulnerable about them, put those things in a safe deposit box.  

 

In terms of the stock market, some of you will recoup losses which will be great but at the same time don’t get lazy and think that you are done with hits.  Instead, once you get your profits back or at least your initial investment; switch your money to something less speculative.  Use this lunar cycle to get smart and invest with long vision.  Head winds are coming and this is the month you get a gift of being able to prepare for it.

 

 

 

 

And as the first earth sign of the zodiac, land (real estate) connects to Taurus. If you have been sitting on the side lines waiting to buy real estate this would be the lunar cycle to finally go to Open Houses.  There may be some good bargains and you will probably be ready to commit. 

 

But again, caution must be used.  Don’t fall for Taurus’s gluttonous side.  It would be wiser to go for a smaller sized house with good long term future (near rapid transit, good water resources, temperate climate) than a big house in area with less resources (reliant on car, air conditioning, heating, expensive water).   Use wisdom.  Get feedback.  And if your gut says it is still too high..then follow it.  Remember one of the greatest resources an individual can possess is a strong gut. 

 

 

A grand trine

 

Okay, so we have a lot of lovely Taurus energy sending us ways to be practical, ways to build things, ways to improve things, ways to be creative, ways to find new resources.   At the same time Venus (the lover) and Saturn (hard worker) and Pluto (the surgeon) are in the three Earth Signs making a grand Trine to each other.  Venus is in its home sign of Taurus and naturally this brings out it most loving nature.  And Saturn in Virgo loves discretion and daily hard work and Pluto in Capricorn can use its laser to pull out the issue in any broken infrastructure.   This is a wonderful energy for anyone who is having problems in their marriage or their relationships.   The grand trine will be creating an atmosphere which would be perfect for couples to finally fix some of their long standing issues.  Perhaps, a great marriage counselor will become available, perhaps one of the partners will finally sit still enough to hear their partner in a way that will a elicit solutions to long term problems.   And perhaps couples who really have out grown each other and need to move on, will do just that. 

 

Additionally, this is again a good money aspect since Venus is one of the money planets and for those people who seem to be running short each month, this lunar cycle could be the cycle where they find more of their god given talents (venus) and put it to work for them (Saturn) and heal their finances (Pluto).

When is the last time you have looked at your abilities?  Your talents? Your skills?  What did you love to do when you were a kid?  Is it time to resurrect your skills?

 

During this lunar phase you will be able to look at your skills with an openness and from that place many solutions can be found.

     

 

Unique Adventure versus status quo

 

Of course not everything can be perfectly idealistic in any month and although this lunar cycle is quite strong with many beneficial influences there is an aspect between the Sun/Moon and Chiron that will pit two groups against each other. Those who follow their unique nature and buck the system versus those who uphold the status quo, doing that what society seems ‘sure and steady’.  The challenge is who is right?   And what are we going to do with it?  There will be many opportunities for us to straighten up and fly right and have a piece of the pie that everyone fights for and there will also be the opportunity to say, “Hey that’s not for me, I’m more into ____”  Of course the minute someone veers in a different direction than the status quo is the minute feelings get hurt and feathers get ruffled.   You would be wise to not get too sucked into the dramas if they happened around you. Or if you are a part of it yourself and find yourself struggling between both worlds then give yourself a break and forgive yourself for your unique nature and forgive yourself for your conservative side.  Both have their place.

The coziness of the lunar new moon are rich with possibilities. That is for sure but at the same time we do have a few bumpies in the road.

 

Jupiter retrograde

 

Jupiter goes retrograde once a year and on May 9, Jupiter will retrograde in the sign Capricorn.  It is interesting that this Taurus New moon is giving all of us an opportunity to improve our investments and possibly find new resources which will give our money a shot of B-12.  But Jupiter going backwards will certainly slow down any of us who still have exorbitant natures which may help inflation.  Remember, Jupiter is such a big planet and whatever it does is big.  As I have indicated before, there is a rub when big Jupiter is in such a conservative, somewhat restrictive, sign like Capricorn.   But, Jupiter is a lucky planet and does bridge us to other worlds and helps us solve problems by reaching to new areas.  Of course while in Cap we must pay the piper if we want a new bridge built.  The world has some big issues that need help and Jupiter will be resourceful but not until after it completes this retrograde in the Fall.  Until then expect a summer of bootcamp.  And god knows our politicians will certainly be challenged.  If they have not been walking their talk, this is the summer where many a politician will be busted for any hypocrisy.   Expect consumer spending to drop further but at the same time people will be learning the value of skipping the frivolous.  As much as it might sting, remember the old adage, “Give a man a fish, you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime.”

 

With that in mind, teach people how to conserve their money and resources and you save a country and a world.

 

 

Mercury retrograde

 

About Three times a year Mercury goes backward.  In 2008 all the Mercury retrogrades will take place in air signs.  We experienced Mercury retrograde in Aquarius back in the Winter. Now we are going to have the retrograde in Gemini when on May 26 it will go backwards.  Mercury is ruled by Gemini and so this has a bit more punch than other retrogrades.  Our communication will truly be nuts.  Our thoughts will be crazy.  Expect a lot of cuckoo stories in the news.  Expect your own thoughts to spark like a corroded wire on an extension cord.  “Ouch, I just shorted the kitchen!”  Of course it does not mean we are crazy it just means that our thinking needs a tune up.  No one is immune from as my dear friend says, “Monkey brain.”

 

And the fact that this retrograde is taking place at the beginning of vacation season means everything from airline tickets to parking places anything involved with the trip needs to be tripled checked.

 

Neptune retrograde

 

And now here is where things get interesting.  Twenty seven minutes after Mercury goes backwards, Neptune will also retrograde.   Neptune retrogrades every year but it is most notable that this Neptune retrograde occurs in Aquarius another air sign so once again, we are being asked to rethink our thoughts.  Neptune has been in Aquarius for ten years and during this time a new society, a society that is both humanitarian and enlightened has been forming.  Of course every society and age would like to think that they were the enlightened ones.  But truly the times we are in now are extraordinary.  Of course not everyone wants or cares to think about those people beyond their world. They are just either too selfish to think about a person who lives on the other side of the world and works in a shit factory breathing awful air just so that person can buy a piece of crap for a buck or they are simply indifferent.  And that is why god created Neptune retrogrades in Aquarius.  Expect more information to permeate about injustices occurring in other parts of the world and how it all impacts us.  And expect many more problems with Neptune’s number one asset-Oil. Sigh.

 

 

 

 

 

In Closing:

This lunar phase has many good things for us if we are willing to be open and receptive.  Solutions to problems may appear, practical abilities will shine and we certainly can build new foundations (high side of Taurus). We do need to guard against napping through these opportunities and being so lazy that we piss it all away (low side of Taurus). But given the drought we have been experiencing for the last year it seems likely many of us will feel so positive about the energies around us that we will jump on the most perfect opportunities.  And you can take that money to the bank!

New moon: Plant seeds, make calls, activate, start projects.   Activate something that will ideally lead you to more.  This is the phase where INTENT is critical.  Even if the results are not immediate, the intent is there.  You may not have all the answers or road map but you should put out your Intent.  

 

Focus on: Resources.  Focus on security. Focus on ‘sure and steady’.  Patience.  What is worth waiting for?  How can you do something a little bit each day towards a longer goal?  Wher do you need to be firm?  What can you initiate that will bring more security?

 

 

May 8

Crescent:  We will receive information, we will research a bit more, perhaps get feedback on stuff that we planted on new.  Perhaps get some information that will help down the road on a seed we planted a while ago.  We can collect some data now.  Even if you think you are not getting information, stop, and re-look at everything.  Who called you?  Even the silliest things, when they come up during Crescent are note worthy.  A parking ticket?  An argument with a spouse?  A refund check from the phone company?  All of it needs to be considered a message from the universe.  How can this information help you?

 

Focus on:  Home.  Focus on family.  Focus on feelings.  What information are you receiving that impacts your family?   What information are you receiving makes you look at your roots?  Has someone shared something with you that can be used to better your home?  Or does it help you make sense of your own feelings?  What feelings do you have that have been hidden in the shadows? Are they peeking out now?

Jupiter Retrograde

The first order of business with Jupiter retrograde is for all of us to look at our ‘big opinions’.  How are they working for us?  How are they pushing us?  Are they supporting our world?  Or are they hurting us?  Do our big opinions keep a whole beautiful experience out of our reach?   Capricorn is a very sober and practical sign.  It is not comfortable with drama and it likes things that make sense and cents.  While Jupiter goes backwards in this sign be expecting that anything different from the most sanguine approach could be problematic.  But then for those people who strive for a milquetoast experience they may be challenged to stoke their fires since bland may not be serving them.  Remember Capricorn does serve.   Whatever our philosophies they do guide us and in many ways they are the fuel for our engines but whenever Jupiter retrogrades we will see how some people’s opinions are completely misguided.  Look for some big screw ups on the public arena. And god knows between now and September 7, expect some major screw ups by our political leaders. The horse race that is the United States general election could turn into a royal mess this summer.

First quarter: We do more actions based on the information that we just received.  Or we feel our instincts guide us on something.  We pursue again.  We make another call or we see someone. We mail something.  We stir the pot again.  This can be a time when we realize that the goals we planted on New need more action from us, perhaps actions that involve breaking away.   Are there people who say they have our best interest in heart but fear us growing away from them?  Maybe we need to get help from others not the usual suspects.  Some independence may need to be exerted.

 

Focus on: Creativity.  Focus on Pride. Focus on leadership.  What action can you take that support your heart?  Is it time for you to be a hero?  The goals that you planted on new moon, do they really match your creativity?  Stoke your fires.  How are your driven?  Where can you be a star?

 

 

May 12

Mercury enters its shadow.  In about two weeks Mercury is going to do that thing it does that just knocks us off our feet.  Mercury will go retrograde.  Before it goes retrograde we will be in a shadow period.  Meaning anything that comes up between now and May 26 will possibly be ‘revisited’ up until July 4^th.

Gibbous Moon

Gibbous:  We refine our information.  We pick and choose, we discriminate, we organize, we tend to be ‘virgo’ like.  We sort through details.  Have we missed something?  How are we sifting through the information?  Go back and make sure something hasn’t been neglected.  Refine our actions. 

 

Focus on: Partnership.  Focus on balance.  Focus on reflection.  What do your relationships need? How will they support you better?  How can you support them better?   Is there a shadow side to your personality that needs others to help you?  How are you broken?  Can you fix it through other’s efforts?

Full Moon

This is our second full moon in a row in Scorpio.  We will have an echo to last month’s full moon and any issues that came up then will probably be up for us to assess once again this month.

 

 

Full Moon:  We make the needed adjustments on the things we planted. Usually emotions are up and running and for those people who perhaps did not utilize the new moon and the rest of the waxing moon, this is when emotions can get the better of us.  There can often be a big emotional break, for no other reason than to get back on track.   Some partnership will offer up some balance.  The moon is bright and full and there is no room for shadows, what is reflecting on you? 

 

Focus on:  Calculating.  Critical and reserved.  Determined and secretive.  What are the moves and adjustments you have to make that will balance the blustery energy of New?  Is it time to pull in the energy a bit?  Can you be like a surgeon?  Go into your life and extract the things that no longer serve you?  And remember it might not be a ‘thing’ it could be a person or a belief or an emotion.

Take your Gemini friend some place new.  And do it in a fun way.  How about riding the city bus together to some fun new restaurant.  Even if you both have perfectly fine cars, your Gemini will love the novelty.  Give them a trashy magazine while you are at it.  A city bus ride, Star Magazine, and lunch at a whole in the wall that has a great curry dish will make them purr like kitten.  Oh and end the trip with a delicious gossip about a mutual friend.   A perfect birthday.

Disseminating: Share information, find a teacher or someone who has more knowledge. Perhaps there was a big ol’ blow out on the full and one feels in need of support and help, this is the phase to reach out to one who knows more. This is when we find a rabbi or a minister or therapist who gives us more insight.   And of course, you too may be ready to teach and share your own information. 

 

Focus on: Capitalism.  Focus on business.  Sharing information that helps the greater good.   Is there someone who just knows how to make money work for them in your life?  Can they share their info with you?  Ask them.

Everyone by now understand Mercury retrogrades and if you don’t then go to the link I put up in the first part of this article.  As usual, guard against signing important documents.  Push important meetings until after the retrograde has completed. There could easily be screw ups with people as you try to engage in simple tasks and simple conversations.  Everything could seem cockeyed.  Computers have problems, siblings have problems, DOUBLE CHECK THOSE EMAILS BEFORE YOU HIT ‘SEND’!!!!

Neptune Retrograde

Dreamy Neptune retrogrades in Aquarius, teaching us all how to access our humanitarian side.  For many people it is during Neptune retrogrades that they find themselves saying, “I wish I had a job that helped people.”  And perhaps this will be the Neptune retrograde where you actually find a way to help more.  It does not mean that you actually quit your job but you come up with a solution that helps your world and helps your heart. Of course Neptune rules oil so we will have more oil issues between now and November 1 when Neptune goes direct.  There will also be issues around alcohol and it effects.  And as always health care issues will be pronounced.  Spirituality, mysticism and illusion will also be in the news and they are not mutually exclusive.

Third Quarter moon:  Now we do the final adjustments to the seeds we planted on new. The final call, the final letters to send, we follow all the trails that came up that still make sense.  And we let the other parts lay fallow. It is a time of action but wise action.  It is a time for living  “The serenity prayer”

Wisdom to know the difference.

 

Focus on:  Mysticism.  Religion. Things that are spiritual.  The seeds you planted on the new now need some good old fashion prayer.   When is the last time you asked your spiritual advisor for some advice? Now would be the time to get him/her on the phone.

Balsamic:  We release.  We let go.  We prune, we discard, we ditch stuff. We house clean. The things that no longer work, we let them out of our life.  We release so we can clear our unconscious and dream.  We prepare our unconscious to be ready for the next New Moon. 

 

Focus on:  Identity.   Release the need to ‘have it your way.”  Did it occur to you that you might not know it all?  There are other people on the planet and they may have a better plan than you, perhaps if you release your ego they’ll share their wealth with you.
