What is a New Moon?

 

A new moon is when the moon is between the sun and the earth and the illuminated part of the moon is very small.  Technically, when you look up in the sky you only see a small, skinny section of moon.       

 

And the not so technical point of view?

 

Well, similar to farmers and indigenous people, who have used the different phases of the moon for eons, Astrologers also utilizes the different phases of the moon.  Certainly on the New we know it is time to plant seeds.  But the other seven phases are equally important.

 

 

Where should my focus be during this next 28-day cycle?

Emotions and feelings are not to be discarded but at the same time one should not hang on to them.  Let them flow in and out of you so that you can reach the higher ground.

Pisces territory is the cool ocean waters.  The ocean writhes up when whipped by winds, tumultuous, scary, powerful then when the wind disappears, it crashes into flatness-- doldrums leaving even the most seasoned sailor uninspired and scared. 

 

If you have ever been caught in strong waves or currents you know the powerful ocean is not to be fought.  Instead one must learn how to ride the waves or know when to dive deep under a wave before it crashes.  From the safety of shore one can look off into the tumultuous waves and strategize all they want about how to navigate the sea but it is not until one actually gets in the water do they really know what is the best move.   And such is this lunar cycle. We need to get into the water and find our way as we ride up and down the powerful waves.  Of course, because Pisces is a water sign those powerful waves will show up as our emotions.  Sometimes we will crash and pound and other times we are flat and uninspired and of course the bulk of the time we will be somewhere in between. But whatever emotion it is, it is important to get out of the way and let it process through us.  Holding back emotions is about as futile as holding back the ocean.

 

In the last three new moons, The Sun and The Moon have made powerful aspects to both outer and inner planets.  Some of them harsh, some of them positive, but all of them strong.  Now we are experiencing something completely different because the Sun and the Moon at 6 degrees of Pisces are making NO strong aspects with any planet.  Truly, we have nothing to get in the way of the Pisces energy so it is best that we just FEEL our way through the next 28 days.   

 

In the last Moon (the Aquarius Moon) I indicated that it was wise to rise above emotions.  During that period we needed to not let our emotions get the better of us and to try as hard as we could to think more positively.  It was not the moon to be a victim or feel so down that you could not even get out of bed.  I basically said, “Buck up”.   But that was Aquarius now we are in a whole new moon.  And guess what?  On this lunar cycle you can be as emotional as you want.  If you are feeling blue then be blue.  If you are feeling happy, then shout it to the world.  This is the power of Pisces.  You cannot get anywhere without some good old fashion emoting.  But here is the key---- you do not get to be UP all month and you do not get to be DOWN all month.  The ocean is not fierce or flat all month long.  It fluctuates.    And so will be our emotions.  We should prepare to feel many things in any given day.

 

Let’s take a moment to talk about the negative side of Pisces.  Pisces rules booze, drugs and illusion.  It is the sign that says, “I give up”.  On darkest days Pisces says, “I don’t want to live.”    It can be the ultimate victim.    It is the queen and king of self pity.  “Poor, Pisces—your life is so hard.”   Yeah, whatever.  But at the same time, Pisces above all other signs has the ability to get out of his/her body and actually find magic.   It is Pisces who can find the world within the world.   Deep under the sea are fish and plants and ocean animals that live a complete life and for those of us on terra firma we have no idea that such a world exists.  But Pisces they know it, they feel it in their bones.   The question is what Pisces energy are you going to glob onto?   Will your emotions be full of illusions?  Or will they process it out like a wave crashing on shore and once it has passed will you then find a new world with a new solution?   

 

Freedom is as Freedom does

 

For the last dozen or so years while Pluto trekked through Sag it threw daggers at Pisces.  If you question the power of Pluto’s arsenal ask any Pisces how they made it through the last few years and they’ll give you a shell shocked answer.  But now Pluto is aiming its salvos at others signs freeing Pisces from his shackles.  What does this mean for this lunar cycle?  It means that we will have a bit more freedom to access the magic, the dreaminess and the beauty of Pisces.  We had some opportunity in previous Pisces cycles but the way we got there was always a hard path.  Now we get the perks of Pisces in an effortless way.   We can bump around in the day and night maybe running into someone or hearing about something that just ‘feels’ like it might be important.  Not in a scary, ‘uh-oh” way but in a subtle, “hmmm” way.  It has been a long time since we had this kind of Pisces energy.   In all fairness last year’s Pisces New Moon also had Pluto in Capricorn but at that time Pluto was getting ready to go retrograde so it was not as free of an energy as now. 

 

I believe we are finally getting this nice liberated Pisces cycle for a reason.  We have a New Moon in Aries next month and that will be our Treasure Map moon (for more on that go http://margaretwendt.com/columns.php?id=1#article) where we plot and plan the things we would like to have in the next year.   But before we get to that moon we are getting this gentle, soft, emotional yes, but still a much more liberated Piscean Moon.  It is almost as if the Universe wanted us to let down our guard and let the mystical side of ourselves run free and unencumbered before we sit down and map out our goals next month.

One of the businesses that Pisces (i.e. the higher evolved Pisces) truly runs is the school of mysticism.  They know that there are forces at work far greater than us little humans.  Whether it is God, a giant peach or a puppeteer that is for them to decide. But they still know that there is something at work.  And this is the benefit of this lunar cycle.  If some of us are doubtful this would be the cycle to say, “Okay, God, I don’t know if you exist but I’m willing to have you show up.”  Or if you do believe in a force greater than you, now you can say, “I am confident in your power, Spirit we can work together on this issue in front of me.”   Remember, talking to God in the last dozen years during Pisces lunar phase was a bit difficult given Pluto was treating Pisces so poorly. But now we can communicate with Spirit and perhaps hear something we never heard before.   This is important. Especially since we are still in the Saturn/Uranus opposition which has really put the pressure on all of us.  Here we are with Saturn and Uranus cranking down on us every day, “Do this, don’t do that, make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, stretch five dollars to last a week” Sigh.  We are all burnt out and we’re not done with the aspect (finishes the summer of 2010) but the good news we are getting something each month and in this month we are fine tuning our antenna.  This is THE cycle to have our antenna up high.  Again, we are vibing our way through the next 28 days  and we’re not just doing it for sport we need to be doing it with the knowledge that Spirit wants to talk to us.  Spirit wants to harness our emotions.  Spirit wants us to realize our dreams.   This is the cycle to reveal our inner mystics.  I’m not saying you need to open up a Tarot shop.  But you really need to dig in and communicate to your inner self because there might be a voice in there that will be very helpful and prescient.

In addition to our antenna being up high and our hearts needing to vibe our way through this cycle we have one other little trick in the month.  Venus is turning retrograde on March 6.  This is not extraordinary since it retrogrades about every year and half but it is interesting that it is taking place in the sign Aries.  Aries is the sign that knows what it wants, knows where it needs to go, and doesn’t shirk from any hard work or challenges to get what it wants.    Simply said, Venus is the planet of love and desire.  And here Venus is going backwards in the sign of Self interests.   Is it possible that we might think we know what we want but we need to go backwards a bit and re look at our past for a moment or two?   Venus will go direct in mid April so it is not like we have to have our head in the sand forever. But perhaps we are being asked to slow it all down for a moment to see what we really want.  Or more specifically, Venus is the planet of Values.  Perhaps what we really need to value will not get our attention until this retrograde is complete.  It is also highly worth noting that Venus is the planet of money and resources.  I believe retrograde Venus could do havoc on the USA stock market and or Department of Treasury. God knows the Federal Reserve may shows cracks. 

But however it plays out, Venus is asking us to please slow down a minute and find out what we love.

And for curiosity watch your world and the world at large around March 23.  This will be the first Sun/Pluto square since Pluto moved into Capricorn and it probably will be a bit of a bitch.  At the very least it will get us a pretty good idea what is in front of us for the next year and half as we build towards the cardinal square of 2010.  Eyes wide open, please!

 

 

 

In closing:

This lunar cycle should have peaks and valleys. If you dull yourself down so you feel no highs and no lows you will probably be doing yourself a disservice.   Do not fear your emotions rather let them evolve and process through you. When you get on the other side expect to see a clear picture of what you want and what you love.

New moon: Plant seeds, make calls, activate, start projects.   Activate something that will ideally lead you to more.  This is the phase where INTENT is critical.  Even if the results are not immediate, the intent is there.  You may not have all the answers or road map but you should put out your Intent.  

 

Focus on:  Emoting and releasing and repeating.  Plant your seeds which will bring you the greatest connection to spirit.  Know that you are not just floating on a rock in the universe. You are directly connected to your path.

Crescent:  We will receive information, we will research a bit more, perhaps get feedback on stuff that we planted on new.  Perhaps get some information that will help down the road on a seed we planted a while ago.  We can collect some data now.  Even if you think you are not getting information, stop, and re-look at everything.  Who called you?  Even the silliest things, when they come up during Crescent are note worthy.  A parking ticket?  An argument with a spouse?  A refund check from the phone company?  All of it needs to be considered a message from the universe.  How can this information help you?

 

Focus on:  Self.  What are you telling yourself about the things you planted on new moon?  What are others telling you about where You need to be and where you need to go?  Or perhaps your very identity is being pointed out to you now. What does it say?

First quarter: We do more actions based on the information that we just received.  Or we feel our instincts guide us on something.  We pursue again.  We make another call or we see someone. We mail something.  We stir the pot again.  This can be a time when we realize that the goals we planted on New need more action from us, perhaps actions that involve breaking away.   Are there people who say they have our best interest in heart but fear us growing away from them?  Maybe we need to get help from others not the usual suspects.  Some independence may need to be exerted.

 

Focus on:  Breaking free through your communication.   How are you making a move on the things you planted on New Moon?  How are you using your language and your communication to further your goals?  Is it working?

Usually emotions are up and running and for those people who perhaps did not utilize the new moon and the rest of the waxing moon, this is when emotions can get the better of us.  There can often be a big emotional break, for no other reason than to get back on track.   Some partnership will offer up some balance.  The moon is bright and full and there is no room for shadows, what is reflecting on you? 

 

Focus on:  The emotional side versus the down to earth side.  Is the practical side holding back the dreamy side of you?  How are your emotions working against your hard work?  Is it better to see the forests or is better to see the trees?  Have you looked so much to science that you have forgotten Great Mystery?  Which one is hurting or supporting the goals you planted on new moon?

This is when we find a rabbi or a minister or therapist who gives us more insight.   And of course, you too may be ready to teach and share your own information. 

 

Focus on:

Power, release, empowerment, sex and loans.  Have you learned something about resources that you can share with others?  Is there someone out there who has experienced something smart and wise about resources that they can share with you? Have you asked them?  Why not?
