The Hierophant is the number five in the Major Arcana series. In old decks, this card was known as “The Pope”. He is the leader, the top of the hierarchy, of the spiritual organization.


In the Rider Waite Deck, The Hierophant sits between two pillars. In his left hand he holds the triple cross, symbol of his spiritual authority. His right hand is held in a sacred pose and grants a benediction to the faithful.


In Greek mythology, he is Chiron, the Wounded Healer. An immortal, Chiron the centaur was accidentally pricked with a poison arrow. Unable to cure his own pain, he studied and became an expert healer,


The Hierophant asks us to look deeper and LEARN all we can.
